23rd of March 2012 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records

Quickly, before I get into the stock list for the week I’d like to draw your attention to a couple things.

1. Follow us on our YouTube Channel so you can see videos like this one with our own Al D.:

2. Follow us on Tumblr where we’re going to be posting the more fun side of things (we aren’t going to just cross post – there will be no stock updates there, for instance). Each part of the internet for each purpose is what I always say (that’s actually the first time I’ve ever formed that sentence).

Citizens Arrest Soaked In Others Blood 7″
(Painkiller / Coextinction)
Painkiller is always churning out the hardcore bangers. This time, they’ve brought us a physical release of last year’s 4-song digital only, “Soaked In Others Blood” by Citizens Arrest. These are the first new songs by this band in 21 years. Surprisingly, these songs hold up really well next to the band’s earlier songs; more along the lines of  the short and sweet “Death Threat” then the epic, “Burst Of Silence”. For those unfamiliar, CA was a hardcore band from New York in the late eighties & early nineties (ABC NO RIO scene). Raw, fast hardcore punk with fun circle pit parts and a deep Cookie Monster vocal delivery. FFO: Negative FX, Dropdead, & Youth Of Today. Features Ted Leo on guitar and the vocalist from Disma.

Estrogen Highs Irrelevant Future LP
(Trouble In Mind)
It’s hard to objectively review any band you already know you like. I’m not going to be objective here. This is my favorite record by E. Highs at the moment because it is the latest one. The supplemental/transitional instrumentation (Kryssi/Colorguard) is particularly great and interesting in “The World Is Flat” probably because it’s something different to me than the past records. Rock and roll. You like the good old standards like Wire and The Wipers and other bands that don’t start with a “W” then you should finally give these dudes a chance. If you have and you don’t love them already then give this one a listen. Bam. Not objective.

Ivy League 2009-2011 CD

(6131 Records)
This release compiles several 7-inches from this Midland, Texas-based melodic hardcore band. It’s no surprise that their high-energy, emotion-soaked songs (in the same vein as a band like Title Fight) are popular with both hardcore and pop-punk kids. Even though I’m not typically drawn to music leaning toward “emo,” I’m impressed by how good they sound. The lead vocalist’s mournful crooning sounds sincere when touching on themes of self-deprecation due to life’s struggles, particularly relationships gone wrong. The music serves as a fast-paced and catchy means of coping with the downtrodden lyrics. The last three tracks are acoustic: they provide the most down-to-earth, intimate emotional expressions.

Monarch! Omens CD
(At A Loss Recordings)
Originally formed in France, this band consists of prophets of doom (metal) who drag the listener across an ominous landscape of sludge-drone. This is Monarch!’s sixth full-length since the first one in 2005. It’s easy to compare their harsh, slow sound to something like Sunn O))), but I felt it was more along the lines of Khanate or Moss (the latter band did a split single with them in 2007.) “Blood Seeress” sets the mood with acrid, ultra-drawn-out electric strings, punctuated drums and tortured screams synonymous with doom, eventually fading into an eerie dirge that sounds like a choir of long-gone souls. It flows right into the shortest track “Transylvanian Incantations,” which is wrapped in an unsettling, luminous layer of dark electronic ambience, along with some brief moments of a ghostly, distant voice that makes this track even more haunting than the previous one. The album concludes with the 19-minute “Black Becomes the Sun” – it starts out harsh, but soon sounds hopeful with an angelic voice radiating the scorched landscape. Before long, though, the pitch-black clouds return, complete with ethereal, otherworldly shrieks soaring above.

Ed Schrader’s Music Beat Jazz Mind CD/LP
(Load Records.)
Jazz Mind is the new EP from Ed Schrader and Devlin Rice. With war-like chants, minimalist beats and heavy bass lines, Jazz Mind is positively tough. Ed Schrader beats away at a floor tom whilst his vocals echo through empty spaces accompanied by dark bass. There is an aggressive and sometimes grave overtone, but much of the lyrical content is filled with dark humor. Songs that are especially good are ‘Sermon’, ‘Right’, ‘Rats’, and ‘Airshow’. Jazz Mind is definitely worth picking up.
