Sleigh Bells Bitter Rivals
Sleigh-Bells-Bitter-Rivals-Cover-Art-Hi-Res-1024x1024-300x300
(Mom + Pop)
Even though they’ve only been around for five years and already released three full-lengths, this Brooklyn noise-pop duo still sounds just as infectiously bracing as ever.  Alexis Krauss’ furious and sweet voice sounds particularly confident amidst Derek Miller’s blaring electric guitar and very cool beats. It’s the same tried-and-true formula that both critics and fans love, and I’m still not sick of it: there’s just something incredibly appealing about their simple-yet-delicious brand of sugar-sweet noise/dance/whatever-you-want-to-call-it indie-rock. “Sing Like A Wire” is an easy standout for me, sounding like an electrified, funky re-imagining of Michael Jackson during his best years. The emotion-rich “Love Sick” proves to be a strong closer, with its final portion turning the noise down to provide a soft-as-snow, actual sleigh bell-driven lament about lost love.

Brazos Saltwater
Brazos Saltwater 300
(Dead Oceans)
On his second album with this project, the now New York-based Martin Crane creates lively, opulent indie rock that sounds inspired by jazz and tropical music. Opener “Always On” sounds like it should be accompanying a colorful banquet with its concoction of busy guitar, high-flying synth and brisk drums. The first single “How The Ranks Was Won” takes a more straightforward approach with its guitar underscoring an intriguing story that – according to Crane – is about a boy discovering his ancestors’ now-abandoned ship and boarding it. The title track is one of several others with a water theme, telling about seafaring memories with an unmistakable island-influenced guitar that also briefly transitions into a heavy-rocking electric guitar.
