Yamantaka // Sonic Titan UZU
Yamantaka Sonic Titan UZU 300x300
(Suicide Squeeze)
After discovering this experimental Montreal collective’s epic 2011 debut YT//ST, I was excited to see how they planned to top it. The group – with the core members being Japanese-Scottish (Ruby Kato Attwood) and Chinese-Irish (Alaska B) – crafted a full-on half-hour “noh wave” rock opera that fused many Eastern and Western styles. This new record gives a longer, more varied and more dramatic experience that again builds vast landscapes and seascapes while drawing with sources including indie rock, noise rock, cinematic scores and traditional Asian music. The songs flow together more homogeneously, complementing each other like a well-though-out theater production. Attwood’s singing narration is stronger than ever throughout, including the compelling piano-driven opening tracks and more “rocking,” memorable songs like “One” (which features a real chant used by the Mohawk tribe) and “Lamia.”

Big Harp Chain Letters
big_harp-300x300
(Saddle Creek)
Originally Omaha-based husband-wife duo Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney (The Good Life, Bright Eyes, She & Him) created this alt-country project in 2010 after knowing each other for three years: a period that included having children, getting married and multiple cross-country moving. Their fuzz bass-rich second album is as dark and distorted as it is lively and involving, starting with the droll, crunching “You Can’t Save ‘Em All” giving apathetic accounts of unfortunate people. The more low-key “Waiting For Some Drunk” delivers some oddly comforting assurance amidst some people’s shallow, drowning-in-alcohol lifestyles with a repeated request for the new year: “be good to me.”

Fuck Buttons Brainfreeze
Fuck-Buttons-Brainfreeze-300x300
(ATP Recordings)
To promote their latest full-length Slow Focus (which I reviewed on July 26 and still strongly recommend,) this Bristol, England-based electronic duo put out this twelve-inch single pressed on heavy clear vinyl. “Brainfreeze,” as I’ve already mentioned, is an awesome, intoxicating track based on a driving drum loop and rising synth towers. It gives a pumping-up sensation, like a physical and mental preparation for the biggest athletic competition of your life: as the twinkling melody and unabashedly cool electric guitar kick in, I knew from the first listening that I was in love with it. The pulsing new non-album track – the B-side “Royal Flush” – takes another unique approach. It’s built on an unusual looping melody of what sounds like a manipulated arcade machine backed by a slick-textured synth pattern that’d sound right at home on their 2009 album Tarot Sport. The peculiar sound gives way to more of the duo’s trademark shimmering synth-drone before both come together to bring it all full circle.
