Grails Black Tar Prophecies, Vol’s 4, 5 & 6
Grails Black Tar Prophecies, Vol’s 4, 5 & 6 300
(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
Compiling songs from a picture disc and a split with Pharaoh Overlord (as well as a few unreleased ones,) this Portland, Oregon instrumental quartet’s latest record captures an immense, introspective psych/post-rock sound. As their name suggests, Grails sound shrouded in ancient mystery, scoring an enigmatic realm that’s as intriguing as it is druggy and shadowy. The eight-minute “Self-Hypnosis,” for example, is a complex, ever-changing journey through layers of rock styles including progressive, stoner, experimental and more, transitioning effortlessly. It’s not all guitar-based, as others such as “Up All Night” and “A Mansion Has Many Rooms” focus on lovely, enticing piano-and-string sections for more intriguing depth.

Retox YPLL
Retox YPLL 300
(Epitaph / Three One G)\
For the sophomore record from his latest project, Justin Pearson (Swing Kids, The Locust, etc.) continues his tradition of screamed noise-punk. I find Retox to be a little more accessibly structured than something like The Locust, with a tighter-constructed grip on its siege of high-speed technical brutality. It should certainly satisfy fans of his other hardcore/noise rock bands such as Some Girls and Holy Molar, complete with freaky lyrics attacking social injustices and plenty more. My favorites include straightforward thrashers such as “Mature Science” and “The Art of Really, Really Sucking.” I also really liked the almost three-and-a-half-minute “Soviet Reunion” introducing its menacing, slower-burning rage with fifty seconds of nothing but shrill, no-holds-barred electric guitar noise chaos.
