The Cave Singers – Naomi

cavesingers_naomi

(Jagjaguwar)

Formed by Derek Fudesco after Pretty Girls Make Graves disbanded and joined by members of Hint Hint and Cobra High, The Cave Singers is a Seattle quartet that swaps its members post-punk and hardcore backgrounds for rather pleasant indie folk-rock. Their fourth record explores “the every-, any-, all- ways of life,” creating a multi-faceted experience that defies a simple categorization, with lyrical themes about the past, relationships and more. “Have to Pretend,” for example, combines a welcoming, outdoorsy-sounding guitar-and-drum tune with Peter Quirk’s malleable vocals, alternating with distinct doo-wop-style “ooh”-ing. “Northern Lights” is one of my favorites as well, starting as a traditional intimate acoustic ballad before transitioning into an enticing, breathing electric style backed by what sounds like jazz-influenced drums.
