Grave Miasma Odori Sepulcrorum
Grave Miasma Odori Sepulcrorum
(Profound Lore)
Formed in 2002, this London death metal quartet blazes through with the vicious guitars, bellowed vocals and blistering drums that make the genre great. The record’s hellish, misanthropic rush of sound is just what one would expect, influenced by early death metal acts such as Morbid Angel or Autopsy. The tracks varied structures keep me coming back, always morphing through fiery highs, doom lows, breakdowns and more. “Odoratus Sepulcrorum” and “Seven Coils” are some highlights for me, each effortlessly going between white-hot headbanging speed and an eerily slow abyss.

Corrections House Last City Zero
Corrections House Last City Zero
(Neurot)
Listening to this album, it’s no surprise that this supergroup’s members span sludge, post and doom-metal: Mike IX Williams (Eyehategod), Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Sanford Parker (Minsk) and Bruce Lamont (Yakuza). With lyrical themes taken from Williams’ poetry book “Cancer As A Social Activity,” the music feels like a pollution- blackened, terrifying industrial park of decay, destruction and despair. The thick, acrid guitars and mechanized beats make for the most dangerous-sounding moments, but there are also a few breaks from the terror. “Run Through The Night” starts with compelling country-style acoustic guitars before becoming awash in somewhat soothing noise, and the title track is a reflective poem giving a world-weary perspective on the misery found throughout the nation’s trailer parks, major cities and more.
