Music Go Music Impressions
Music Go Music Impressions
(Thousand Tongues)
I’m not usually drawn to cleanly produced dance-pop, but there’s something particularly irresistible about this Los Angeles-based trio’s music. On their first album in five years, Music Go Music sounds straight out of a high-class disco in the 70s, with glistening, intricate multi-instrument melodies coupled with warm vocals to make them sound like an opening act for ABBA. It’s just a really energetic, celebratory and emotion-driven experience throughout, with my favorites including the longingly romantic “Tell Me How It Feels” and dramatic, driving “Part of Me.”

Damaged Bug Hubba Bubba
Damaged Bug Hubba Bubba
(Castle Face)
Best known for spanning garage and noise rock in bands including Thee Oh Sees, Coachwhips and Pink and Brown, singer and multi-instrumentalist John Dwyer sounds unexpectedly spacey but still fittingly lo-fi on his new electronic pop project. He provides subdued vocals for his mechanized, pulsing minimalist synth compositions. My favorite song is probably the danceable “Eggs at Night,” built around a memorable hook that latches on instantly. “Photograph” is another highlight, with whirring electronics swooping high-and-low with very droll post-punk-style singing.
