Xeno & Oaklander Par Avion
Xeno & Oaklander Par Avion
(Ghostly International)
This Brooklyn-based duo performs a distinct style of ambient synth-pop, exclusively using analogue synthesizers and instruments that sound straight out of electronic music’s early days. Their latest album could be described as “coldwave” with its intricate Arctic-sounding textures and beats with some howling electronic winds as well. Both members’ vocals play a big role as well, with the French / Norwegian Miss Liz Wendelbo sounding hypnotically breathy while Maryland’s Sean McBride sounds like a long-lost brother to Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan. Some of my favorites include the frigid night-strolling title track and the much zippier “Nuage d’Ivoire,” showcasing Wendelbo’s truly haunting vocal technique.
