Explosions In The Sky & David Wingo Prince Avalanche: An Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Explosions In The Sky David Wingo Prince Avalanche
(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
David Gordon Green’s comedy-drama film Prince Avalanche involves two men who strike up an unlikely friendship while working together to repaint traffic lines in the wildfire-ravaged countryside of Bastrop, Texas. It’s fitting that two Texas-based acts collaborated to score the isolated, introspective experience: mostly-instrumental post-rock quartet Explosions In The Sky (who are no strangers to features such as Friday Night Lights) and film composer David Wingo (frontman of indie rock band Ola Podrida.) Together, they create a thoughtful sound out of primarily piano, acoustic guitar and synth: the simple, reserved beauty of the quaint “Hello, Is This Your House?” and the surprisingly brisk drumming pace of “Join Me On My Avalanche” make them highlights for me.

Modern Vices Modern Vices
Modern Vices Modern Vices
(Autumn Tone)
This young Chicago band describes their sound as a combination of garage rock and late-1950s-style “dirty doo-wop.” Their self-titled debut is brimming with energetic, room-filling indie-rock, carried by lead singer Alex Rebek’s incredibly passionate voice with a wide range. Coupled with hook-laden dual-guitar melodies, it feels like a nostalgic trip through romantic (and not-so-romantic) summers past, with some of my favorite tracks including the fuzzy surf number “(Don’t) Hold Me Down” and loudly energetic “You’re So Special.”
