Strand of Oaks HEAL
Strand of Oaks HEAL(Dead Oceans)
Since the Indiana-born Timothy Showalter has had a rough life (an unfaithful partner, homelessness after his house burned down), his emotions sound really cathartic on his fourth album. He deviates from his softer acoustic folk-rock past for an energetically rocking album of nostalgia and personal reflection, immediately kicking into gear with an intense, celebratory look back at the roots of his music interest on “Goshen ’97.” Far from upbeat but still poignant is the solemn “JM,” with a crunching guitar and lyrics paying tribute to fallen singer Jason Molina, whose music helped Showalter through hopeless times.

Pig Heart Transplant For Mass Consumption
Pig Heart Transplant For Mass Consumption(Iron Lung)
Best known for being in the powerviolence duo Iron Lung, Jon Kortland uses his Pig Heart Transplant project for brutal power electronics/noise experimentation. Like an uncompromising mechanical dystopia, it’s a barrage of twenty-eight tracks of almost identical length (about forty-four seconds each) with skull-shaking percussion and stark synth textures while Kortland shouts appropriate lyrics of despair.
