Matrixxman Homesick
Matrixxman(Ghostly International)
Charles McCloud Duff is a Bay Area DJ and producer whose fascination with a dark, cybernetic future (he loves reading sci-fi novels and government conspiracy theories) shows on this debut album. His minimalist ambient techno conjures up images of stark, metallic industrial areas, like walking through an inorganic dystopia (it’s also good for pumping from a cool new car’s speakers.) The most ominous is the nine-and-a-half minute opener “Necronomicon,” which creates the sensation of aircraft ascending and descending through jet-black clouds. One of the lighter songs I really like is “Packard Plant,” creating a surprisingly laid-back atmosphere reminiscent of a Detroit factory where said automobiles were manufactured until the end of the 50s.

Sebadoh Defend Yourself
Sebadoh(Joyful Noise)
Now almost three decades into their existence, Sebadoh still deliver a high-energy blast of fuzzy indie rock on this eighth studio album (released fourteen years after their last one). It definitely sounds faithful to their pre-new-millennium sound, rocking with down-tuned guitars and bittersweet subject matter about lost love (indeed, inspiration came from lead singer-songwriter Lou Barlow’s twenty-five-year marriage dissolving.) One of my personal favorite tracks is “Oxygen”, with melodic rock juxtaposed with lyrics about wasting time ruminating on a dead relationship.
