Lavender Country Lavender Country [Reissue]
Lavender Country(Paradise of Bachelors)
Radicalized by both the Stonewall riots and his ejection from the Peace Corps for being gay, Patrick Haggerty became an activist who recorded this one-off album that was originally released in 1973. As the name implies, it’s a record of country music themed around the experience of being gay (unsurprisingly, it flourished underground rather than on mainstream stations.) It might sound like a gimmick, but Haggerty and his backing band give a heartfelt piano-and-string-backed performance that’s both light-hearted (such as opener “Come Out Singing”) and serious (“Waltzing Will Trilogy” addresses shock treatment and prison abuse after falsely being called a child molester.)
