Deerhoof The Magic
Deerhoof The Magic(Polyvinyl)
Since this San Francisco-spawned avant-pop/noise/punk rock band is so prolific (they put out a new record almost every year), I was curious to see what they had planned for this thirteenth studio album. As it turns out, this fifteen-track album is far from sounding tired: rather, it’s impressively energetic and refreshingly loose, with the main driving force this time being intense power-pop-style guitar rock that sounds reminiscent of the 80s. Some of my favorites in a loud-rocking, lo-fi style include the opener “The Devil and his Anarchic Surrealist Retinue” and “Acceptance Speech”, as well as the more tightly-structured head-bobbing “Criminals of the Dream”.

Public Service Broadcasting The Race for Space
Public Service Announcement Race For Space(Test Card)
The mission of this London duo (comprised of J Willgoose, Esq. and Wrigglesworth) is “to teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future” by taking clips from old public service, archival and propaganda films and adding musical accompaniment. The Race for Space is their sophomore full-length, using soundbites related to American-Soviet space race from 1957 to 1972. The duo’s instrumentation varies depending on the subject matter: though “Fire in the Cockpit” is a subdued, somber white-noise-and-string recollection of the Apollo 1 disaster, most of the album is dedicated to triumphant firsts. “Sputnik”, for example, uses techno beats, electric guitar strumming and swelling synth to commemorate the launch of the first satellite, while “Valentina” features blissful vocals from dream pop duo Smoke Fairies in a tribute to Vostok 6 (the first spaceflight to feature a woman.)
