Mono Requiem for Hell
mono-requiem-for-hell
(Temporary Residence Limited)
On their ninth studio album, this prolific Japanese instrumental post-rock band continues their shimmering, epic sound (with production by Steve Albini for the first time since 2009’s Hymn to the Immortal Wind) focusing on themes of birth and death. Mono have always about sounding huge, but this time there’s a louder intensity than ever, starting with the marching drum-powered “Death in Rebirth” building to an incredibly bracing climax. The eighteen-minute centerpiece title track gets similarly dramatic, but there are soothing moments such as the string-and-piano piece “Stellar” and “Ely’s Heartbeat” (based around the pulse of a pregnant friend’s unborn child.)

Douglas Dare Whelm
douglas-dare-whelm
(Erased Tapes)
This London-based singer-songwriter creates a powerful emotional and melancholy atmosphere using little more than his voice, piano and electronics (producer Fabian Prynn also contributed instrumentation.) On this debut album (he’s also since released a follow-up called Aforger), Douglas Dare provides the lyrics in the form of a poetry booklet exploring themes including “our apparent fascination for time and insatiable need for answers” and “nature’s unstoppable ruling of everything.” “Nile”, for example, expresses feelings of powerlessness and heartache concerning love.
