Cult Leader
Lightless Walk
(Deathwish)
After the 2013 dissolution of Salt Lake City-based sludge/grind/mathcore band Gaza, three of its members (guitarist Michael Mason, bassist Anthony Lucero and drummer Casey Hansen) rejoined to form Cult Leader. Still harnessing Gaza’s unrelenting rage but less “experimental” and more metalcore-focused, Cult Leader also showcases Lucero’s flexible vocal range (Sam Richards has taken over as bassist.) Lucero really shines on the seven-minute-plus title-track finale, conveying a hopeless, emotionally-drained mood backed by an atmospheric, sky-wide-sounding blend of doom, sludge and post-rock.

Jacuzzi Boys
Ping Pong
(Mag Mag)
On their fourth full-length, this Miami trio serves up shimmering, extra-fuzzy garage/psychedelic rock with a catchy pop edge. The bio states that they spent months perched on a Los Angeles radio antenna “soaking in the city’s gamma rays, scavenging off the streets, molting their wings into feathers of a different sheen” and it shows on their music’s undeniable summery energy and radiance. The title and artwork come from the appropriately titled “Strange Exchange”, in which a nosy neighbor wants to use the singer’s toothbrush and play ping-pong with pills.
