AFI
 AFI (The Blood Album)
(Concord)
Like most teenagers of the 2000s, I was first introduced to AFI (A Fire Inside) in 2003, when their mainstream breakthrough album Sing the Sorrow blended dramatic alternative rock and goth-punk, eventually earning platinum certification. On their self-titled tenth album, AFI decide to settle on an accessible and mature sound that also incorporates post-punk for another cinematic, gripping atmosphere. “Snow Cats” definitely reminds me of Sing the Sorrow’s vibe, with a poignant chorus vowing to wait for someone while “dressed in Himalayan white.” “Hidden Knives” is another definite standout, with melodic energy and a soaring chorus that sounds like a track from their Decemberunderground record given a much-welcome Art of Drowning boost.

Mary Epworth Dream Life
(Highline / Hand of Glory)
This English singer-songwriter’s debut album features a blend of psychedelic pop, folk and rock for a uniquely flowing synth-based sound that comes together well. “Black Doe” sounds rooted in classic rock, opening with banjo that leads up to a surprisingly intense, power-packing chorus. The tender piano-based ballad “Six Kisses” shows off an effective, soothing-sounding plea for one’s love.
