Car Seat Headrest
Teens of Denial
(Matador)
Originally founded in Leesburg, Virginia in 2010 as a solo project by singer-songwriter and multi-instumentalist Will Toledo (who recorded vocals in his car’s backseat for privacy), Car Seat Headrest is now a four-piece indie rock band. They gained a huge following through Bandcamp with energetic, refreshing pop-rock tunes told from a personal perspective (though their DIY music started as lo-fi, there’s better production on this newest album.) One highlight is “Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales)”, giving a take on teen angst and depression by comparing it to a drunk driver trying to get home (Toledo also took inspiration from the depressing portrayal of killer whales in the documentary Blackfish.)
