Wolf Eyes
Undertow
(Lower Floor)
Now having adopted the genre tag “psychojazz”, Wolf Eyes focus on creating a dreary, bombed-out ambience with electronics, horns and spoken-word vocals on their latest release (also the first one on their own label.) The Detroit trio sculpt a desolate, war-town sonic landscape, with a more subdued, mature sound (Nate Young lends his bleak observational poetry to the first and last tracks.) “Texas” is one of my favorites, sounding like an eerie plain overtaken by ghosts from the distant past.

Adebisi Shank This Is the Third Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank
(Sargent House)
Despite having a name that conjures up an image of one of the most dangerous inmates on the HBO drama Oz, Irish instrumental rock trio Adebisi Shank had an upbeat, high-energy electronic-rock sound (they’ve unfortunately since broken up.) Their extensively long list of influences includes everyone from Michael Jackson to My Bloody Valentine, but their sound most closely resembles bands like Battles, Don Caballero or Anamanaguchi. Their lively, colorful and triumphant synth/math rock mixed with wordless vocals sounds like it belongs in a video game universe (specifically Sonic the Hedgehog, considering one song is titled “Chaos Emeralds”).
