What If
(Temporary Residence Ltd.)

German composer and electronic musician Volker Bertelmann is best known for his work based around the prepared piano (the sound is altered by placing objects on or among the strings.) Hearing this latest album from this project responsible for his prolific discography makes it clear that he’s skilled at creating scores (his work for films and documentaries has earned Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.) What If, however, is a concept album envisioning the world in thirty years’ time, when global warming has led to changing nature. Despite the dramatic subject matter, these instrumental pieces avoid sounding too weighty, taking on experimental, neo-classical and minimalist elements to paint an intriguing picture of utopian concepts.
