Inspired while reading an English book of metaphysical poetry (saying that 17th century writer Robert Herrick touched on “death, pain, longing and loneliness” while also bringing “hope, solace, and peace,”) Polish electronic composer Michal Jacaszek decided to incorporate the poems of Herrick (as well as one by the ancient Roman Virgil) as song lyrics. Hania Malarowska lends her voice to these poignant passages, which serve as an excellent match to Jacaszek’s hauntingly subdued ambient/modern classical electronics based on a palette of sensual, ever-morphing samples.

Donovan Blanc Donovan Blanc
(Captured Tracks)
Comprised of Raymond Schwab and Joseph Black, Donovan Blanc definitely sound influenced by 60s and 70s album-oriented rock with strong vocal melodies (reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel) coupled with lively, glowing acoustic guitars. It’s no surprise that their folk and sunshine pop dwells on romantic concepts such as longing and fascination, with some favorites including “Hungry A Long Time” and “Minha Menina” (Portugese for “My Girl”.)
