METZ
Strange Peace
(Sub Pop)
Hailing from Toronto, this noise-punk trio strikes a great balance between “abrasive” and “accessible” on their third record (captured authentically by Steve Albini.) Their mix of anguished vocals, feedback-heavy guitar and a slamming rhythm section come together with crushing momentum and a high velocity that’s easy to jump into. One good example is the first single “Cellophane”, utilizing a melody that’s as heavy as it is catchy alongside lyrics about being wrapped in plastic and buried.

The Stray Birds
Best Medicine
(Yep Roc)
This Lancaster, Pennsylvania-spawned singer-songwriter and multi-instrumalist trio (all classically trained) create rich music with a sound that draws from country, bluegrass and Americana. Their acoustic guitar, bass, slide and fiddle melodies coupled with three-part harmonies showcase their talent for authentically emotional songs such as the gripping, dramatic imagery-filled “Feathers and Bone” and the humble and gloomy “Simple Man”.
