Sun Ra | Merzbow
Strange City
(Cold Spring)
For this release, Japanese noise icon Masami Akita was granted permission to sample rare and unreleased music by American free jazz legend Sun Ra (who passed away twenty-four years ago): Strange Strings and The Magic City get remixed and “deformed” with Merzbow’s trademark avant-garde cacophony. Essentially, it’s a bracing, mind-scrambling electronic noise-trip complemented with Sun Ra’s organic instrumentation, fusing sounds bridged by half a century (it’s also worth noting that the CD and vinyl versions have different music.)

Tangents
Stateless
(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
On their second album, this Sydney, Australia five-piece most definitely thrives on the “experimental” side of experimental rock, utilizing improvisational elements with a variety of percussion, piano, synth and more. Opener “Jindabyne”, for example, has a breezy, somewhat soothing “natural” sound with loosely structured piano, synth and vibraphone atop tireless drums. “N-Mission” has a much speedier and more adventurous pace with brisk drums and too-fast-to-sound-human piano.
