Diana Perpetual Surrender

With a sound that’s been described as chillwave, Toronto synthpop trio Diana play shimmering, multi-textured songs that sound like an evolved version of dreamy 80s pop. The lovelorn title track touches on self-reflection (“I don’t need somebody else / to let me know how much I love you” and “I need saving for myself”) with rich synth and saxophones that conjure up romantic images of the 80s. The groovy, danceable “Born Again” is another highlight, with the hopeful theme of joining a partner to escape the negativity of a small town for a better life.

Born in Japan and currently based in New York City, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mitski Miyawaki plays an emotional and innovative blend of indie, punk and electronic rock that focuses on topics such as love, depression and racial identity on this fourth album (she also has another record coming later this year.) These heartfelt songs also utilize hooks effectively: “Your Best American Girl”, for example, climaxes with a thick wall of memorable shoegaze amid lyrics about the uncertainty of meeting an American boyfriend’s expectations. “My Body’s Made Of Crushed Little Stars” channels modern feelings of anxiety with a harsh, glittery acoustic guitar riff and passionately crackling vocals reminiscent of Alanis Morissette.
