Houndmouth
Little Neon Limelight
(Rough Trade)
Hailing from New Albany, Indiana, this band plays indie-folk and alternative country with unmistakable references to Americana and roots rock. They demonstrate an effective range from the laid-back desert-breeze of “Sedona” to the raucous old-school rock ‘n’ roll of “15 Years”, with vocals bound to inspire the listener to sing along. Another favorite is the irresistibly danceable guitar-and-organ-based “Say It”, with enthusiastic vocals encouraging someone to lower their expectations to increase the chances for a relationship.

Rachelle Garniez
Who’s Counting
(StorySound)
A native New Yorker who grew up in a musical household and played accordion on street corners for years, Rachelle Garniez is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who contributes vocals, piano and accordion to this album of intricate compositions (guest musicians contribute strings, horns and bass as well.) The smoky, old-fashioned atmosphere of classic soul and jazz sounds distinctly evocative of New York’s character with thoughtful lyrics describing daily life and romance. One of my favorite tracks is the poignant piano-and-cello based “Long Way to Jerusalem”, using biblical imagery to represent life’s challenging moments.
