Bell Witch
Mirror Reaper
(Profound Lore)
Clocking in at eighty-three minutes, this Seattle metal duo’s third full-length album is a heavy, melancholy and emotional epic journey of funeral doom. Created using only bass, percussion, vocals and organ, Mirror Reaper feels like experiencing all stages of grief: primarily the lengthy intervals of somber introspection interspersed by bursts of bracing upset. The title was inspired by the Hermetic axiom “As Above, So Below”, with the song intended to be both its own and its reflection to continue the band’s interest in ghosts and the dichotomy of life and death. They also reserved a portion of the song near the end to utilize previously unheard vocals of their former drummer-vocalist Adrian Guerra, who passed away during the recording process (it makes for an especially poignant experience.)

Moon Duo Shadow of the Sun
(Sacred Bones)
Here’s a Portland psychedelia/proto-punk band formed in 2009 as a side project of Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson. Joined by vocalist-keyboardist Sanae Yamada and guest drummer John Jeffrey, they craft a trippy, dark and hazy sound comparable to bands like Psychic Ills and A Place To Bury Strangers. Their subdued vocals combined with eerie keyboards and stark guitars make for a moody and ominous yet engaging and sometimes danceable atmosphere, such as “Night Beat” and “Slow Down Low”. One of my favorites is the soothing centerpiece “In A Cloud” for its ethereal sustained keyboards.
