Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda – The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda
(Luaka Bop)
Born Alice McLeod, this multi-talented jazz musician, bandleader and composer began her career in the early 1960s. She also married John Coltrane and later adapted the name Turiyasangitananda (meaning “the Transcendental Lord’s highest song of Bliss”) on a spiritual journey to India after the death of her husband. In 1983, she established the Sai Anantam Ashram (an ashram being a traditional Indian spiritual hermitage or monastery) outside of Los Angeles and recorded a series of cassette tapes for the members. This compilation (the first in a series called World Spirituality Classics) features several of the tracks previously unheard by the general public, showcasing Turiyasangitananda’s subdued but powerful vocals (backed by a huge ensemble of singers from the ashram) and lush arrangements consisting of organ, synthesizer, harps and strings. Many of these tracks consist of rich, meditative walls of synth that, coupled with large crowds reciting mantras, make for an especially engrossing listen.
