Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Sex & Food
(Jagjaguwar)
On their fourth album, this New Zealand-based band blends a retro-flavored concoction of psychedelic rock, funk, disco and pop to progress their intoxicating, multi-layered sound. “American Guilt” may be their most aggressive and grimy song yet, with a heavily distorted riff and unsettling lyrics up for interpretation (“tape over the camera / no more utopian video / eyes painted on eyelids / viva la Mexico”). The fluttering and carefree “Hunnybee” is an easy highlight, achieving a sunny sound with bright strings and catchy hook with a lively disco beat.
