Upcoming Shows

TONIGHT, October 11th

*Mikaela Davis w/ Lyon Street Fire

$15/All Ages/Doors 7:00PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden

INFO: “This record is kind of about writing a record,” Mikaela Davis says. The 26-year-old is home in her native Rochester, New York, reflecting on Delivery, her highly anticipated full-length album, as well as the hard journey the classically trained, defiantly original harpist had to travel to become the writer, performer, and band leader she was meant to be.

“A lot of these songs came from feeling stuck and also like people were pulling me in a bunch of different directions,” Mikaela says. “I wanted to say, ‘Just wait for me. I’ll figure it out.’”

Mikaela’s plea for patience––a little bit sweet, a little bit angry and raw––fed a fierce 10-song collection. A joyride that pulls from folk rock, 70s and 80s pop experimentation, and muscly funk, Delivery manages to be both daring and comfortable, full of not just risks, but hooks.

*Titus Andronicus w/ Summer Cannibals

$15/All Ages/Doors 7:00PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden, CT

INFO: Since debuting in 2008, Titus Andronicus [hereafter +@] has been conditioning faithful listeners to always expect only the unexpected, consistently zigging where others would zag and maintaining a steadfast dedication to fearless ambition. With the March 2 release of the new studio album A Productive Cough on Merge Records, +@ has executed the most shocking departure yet—but only if, as ever mercurial singer-songwriter Patrick Stickles insists, “you haven’t been paying attention.”

In a move that may infuriate the black-denim-and-PBR set, A Productive Cough finds +@ setting aside the lead-footed punk anthems of yesteryear in favor of a subtler, more spacious approach that pushes Stickles’ soul-baring songwriting to the fore, creating a conversational intimacy between artist and audience with which previous +@ efforts had only flirted.

*The Early November, The Dangerous Summer w/ Jetty Bones, Save Face

$22 ($18 advance)/All Ages/Doors 7PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden, CT

INFO: Now, newly reformed and reunited with Hopeless Records, the band—Perdomo, guitarist Matt Kennedy and drummer Ben Cato—are ready to begin their second chapter with the release of their fourth full-length album in 2018, produced by James Paul Wisner (Underoath, Dashboard Confessional, Paramore). The band’s forthcoming album, their first in four years, looks to build on an already accomplished discography. The Dangerous Summer’s first three albums—2009’s Reach For The Sun, 2011’s War Paint and 2013’s Golden Record—were more than just critically acclaimed: They were collections of visceral, textured alternative rock that shook audiences to their core with an unrivaled musical heft and lyrical honesty. They were songs that demanded your attention, as catchy as they were introspectively vulnerable.

*Arc Iris (Album Release Show) w/ Laura Wolf

Free with RSVP (or $5 at the door)/21+/Doors 7PM

Cafe Nine – New Haven

INFO: Arc Iris crystallizes the evolution of composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Jocie Adams, a former core member of renowned indie-folk band The Low Anthem. This is a breakaway moment for Adams, who now takes center stage as composer, lyricist, and lead vocalist. Embracing her new role as auteur, Adams has created a genre-bending style that often shifts between cabaret-infused jazz, orchestral sophistication, grimy outlaw country, delicate and whimsical harmonies, and big-band exhilaration – sometimes all in the same song. Hers is an all-together different world where fantastical whimsy goes hand in hand with down-to-earth grit, and where rigorous classical training inflects but never softens the visceral rawness of hard-won experience.

*Gratefully Yours

$15 ($12 adv)/All Ages/ Doors 7PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden, CT

INFO: Gratefully Yours has quickly established itself as one of the Northeast’s premiere Grateful Dead cover bands; with a truly all-star lineup and often performing “dream” set lists submitted by their fans. The band was founded in 2012 by Alex Mazur, (founder and keyboardist of The Deadbeats… one of the, if not the longest running Grateful Dead cover bands in existence). Along with a core lineup that includes, Adam Czolowski (Sonic Garden), Tom Pirozzi (Ominous Seapods), Jeff Martinson (Shakedown) and Rob Schiff (Nailed Shutt), other honored members include Vinnie Amico (moe.), Rob Eaton (Dark Star Orchestra), Russ Lawton (Trey Anastasio Band), Bill Carbone (Max Creek) and Zach Nugent (Cats Under The Stars).

The Dead were a truly unique band and had a unique bond with their audience: Magic is what they did. Music was how they did it. Ultimately, it is that magic that Gratefully Yours aims to “cover” and pay tribute to. And taking it one step further, they also encourage their audience to participate further in the creative process by giving them the opportunity to submit their dream set lists (or vote for one) online and the band often chooses one to perform at their shows. But of course, you never know what might happen…

*Ripe

$15/All Ages/Doors 7PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden, CT

INFO: On a primal level, we react to music through movement. A head-nod, a foot-tap, or a handclap certainly shows appreciation, but dancing seals the eternal bond between audience and musician. Siphoning the spirits of rock, funk, R&B, jazz, and pop through a kaleidoscope of unpredictable and virtuosic improvisation, Boston-based seven-piece Ripe consistently bring people to their feet. Most importantly, they prove that “dance music” in its purest form doesn’t have to come from computers and synthesizers. It can be an unstoppable groove or an extended moment of ecstatic release. Like those bodies moving on the floor, it’s the result of the energy, friction, and communication between living and breathing people. An inimitable and indefinable chemistry has separated and singled out Ripe since day one. Subverting any and all standard genre boundaries once again, their latest offering confidently continues that tradition. These seven musical soulmates —Robbie Wulfsohn [vocals], Tory Geismar [guitar], Jon Becker [guitar], Sampson Hellerman [drums], Josh Shpak [trumpet], Calvin Barthel [trombone], and Nadav Shapira [bass]—once again incite listeners to move on their independent full-length debut, Joy In The Wild Unknown.

*Reggie and the Full Effect (Solo) w/ Andy Jackson (of Hot Rod Circuit)

$20 ($16 advance)/All Ages/Doors 7PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden, CT

INFO: Reggie and the Full Effect have always been a mystery. Who are they? What do they want? Where do they come from? There have, of course, been explanations. Studio fires, faked deaths, cryptic bios and tall tales of many sorts were countered by rumors that James Dewees—keyboardist for rock heroes The Get Up Kids’ and drummer for seminal metalcore act Coalesce—was somehow behind all the crazy characters taking credit for Reggie and the Full Effect’s synth-rock goodness. First there was the enigmatic Reggie, the band’s apparent namesake and protagonist in a strange musical tale beginning with the release of the band’s Greatest Hits 1984-1987 in 1998, followed closely by Promotional Copy in 2000. Then there was the mustachioed frontman Paco, who came to the fore on 2003’s Under the Tray, and album which also featured an ever-growing cast of characters—Finnish metal band Common Denominator, English synth-pop god Fluxuation, death growler Hungary Bear, the ubiquitous Drunk Guy at the Get Up Kids Show—increasing both the band’s popularity and perplexing mystique.
