Mitski Be the Cowboy
(Dead Oceans)
On her fifth album, this Japanese-American indie-rock singer and multi-instrumentalist strives to channel the feeling of a performer up on stage with a single spotlight pointed toward them. Once again Mitski explores a wide variety of styles and emotions for a truly multi-layered, ever-morphing style that unsurprisingly keeps listeners intrigued throughout these romance-themed songs. The disco-infused piano-rock “Nobody” seems to turn despair into a dance number with hopelessly lonely lyrics atop a lively beat. “Pink In The Night” is a lovely ethereal synth-ballad where Mitski’s voice particularly shines with strong imagery: “it’s like a summer shower / with every drop of rain singing ‘I love you, I love you, I love you’…”
