Helms Alee
Noctiluca
(Sargent House)
Named after a nautical term for tacking a sailboat, this Seattle trio plays a brand of metal that mates strong post-hardcore-influenced melodies with abrasive, crushing sludge and noise rock. All of the members (two female and one male) share vocal duties for particularly memorable, multi-layered harmonies throughout: “Spider Jar” is an especially gorgeous and emotional-sounding demonstration. The swelling Pink Floyd-esque “Pandemic” manages to segue its magic into the rougher “Word Problems”, sweetening the concluding sludge-metal (“Beat Up” is another good hybrid of bare-knuckle harshness and shimmering guitars.)
