Upcoming Shows…

TONIGHT – Thursday (5/16)
Shakey Graves w/ Illiterate Light

$27-$35/All Ages/Doors at 7:00PM

College Street Music Hall – New Haven

INFO: Alejandro Rose-Garcia (aka Shakey Graves) announced his newest album ‘Can’t Wake Up’ (out now on Dualtone) with a simple message to his fans – “Next album. New sound. Sell your suspenders.”

That tongue-in-cheek statement, though, was a genuine attempt to prepare his followers for a major sonic shift for the Texas songwriter, who got his start performing as a one-man band, culminating with an Americana Music Awards win for “Emerging Artist of the Year” behind his breakout full-length album, ‘And The War Came.’

Now armed with a full band, Rose-Garcia leaves behind much of that stripped-down, folk-y sound. ‘Can’t Wake Up’ takes his songwriting in a “decidedly bigger direction” full of “lush indie compositions” (Consequence of Sound), drawing on another set of his musical influences, ranging from the Beatles and Harry Nilsson to Elliott Smith, Broken Social Scene, Built to Spill and other ’90s indie rock bands.

Sitting down with Thrasher Magazine, Rose-Garcia explained what sparked the change in creative direction. “To get your head above water, you have to have an identity. I wore a cowboy hat and played a suitcase drum. There are tons of people who still imagine me as that guy, because that’s the only thing they’ve seen,” he admits. But on this album, he says, “I made something that I want to listen to.”

The response so far proves that it was a worthwhile risk. As NPR Music writer Nina Corcoran put it, he “gambles with the very formula that brought him fame,” adding that “he pulls it off in large part due to his storytelling prowess; these songs would be welcoming, even enthralling, in any style.”

Billboard was struck by Rose-Garcia’s knack for storytelling, calling the album “a lyrical powder keg,” while Brooklyn Vegan said it “ditches the roots rock vibe he’s been known for in favor of something weirder,” adding “it’s not the Shakey Graves you’re used to at all, and it’s very worth a listen.”

With a road-tested group of musicians and a hand-built stage set up complete with psychedelic lighting and props, Shakey Graves’ live show has grown into something much bigger, too. “After smashing his mold on ‘Can’t Wake Up,’ Shakey Graves also revolutionized his live show,” said the Austin Chronicle, describing a recent hometown set as “a seamless and compelling home run of a performance.”

Saturday (5/18)
The Hold Steady w/ The Dream Syndicate

SOLD OUT/All Ages/Doors at 7:00PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden

INFO: Resisting the musical trends in New York City, vocalist/guitarist Craig Finn (ex-Lifter Puller) formed the Hold Steady after moving from Minneapolis in 2000. Wanting to capture the sound of bands such as the Replacements and the Grifters, he recruited guitarist Tad Kubler (also ex-Lifter Puller), drummer Judd Counsell, and bassist Galen Polivka. Recording mostly live, the band released its debut, Almost Killed Me, on Frenchkiss Records in March 2004. Dave Gardener (Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu) and Dean Botulonis signed on to produce Separation Sunday, which arrived in 2005. The World/Inferno Friendship Society’s Franz Nicolay (keyboards) and Bobby Drake (drums), formerly of End Transmission and Arm, were also added to the Hold Steady lineup. The band’s third effort, 2006’s Boys and Girls in America, marked its first release for Vagrant. After writing the majority of their fourth record on the road, the Hold Steady returned to John Agnello’s Water Music studio to record Stay Positive, their most heavily produced effort. In July of 2008, the album was released by both Vagrant and Rough Trade.

In 2010 the band announced the departure of Franz Nicolay. Later that same year they released their fifth album, Heaven Is Whenever. In 2012 the band went on a brief hiatus, with frontman Craig Finn releasing his debut solo album, Clear Heart Full Eyes. Regrouping with new guitarist Steve Selvidge in 2013, the revitalized five-piece reentered the studio to record a track for the Game of Thrones soundtrack — which was also released as a limited-edition single on Record Store Day 2013. Near the beginning of 2014 they announced the release of their sixth album, Teeth Dreams, as well as the covers EP RAGS — all proceeds from the EP went to help the children of longtime Hold Steady fan Mike “Jersey Mike” Van Jura, who sadly passed away in 2012. After the band finished touring for the album, Finn began work on a solo album. The more intimate and personal Faith in the Future was produced by Josh Kaufman and released by Partisan Records in late 2015. He played solo shows throughout the first half of the year, then turned his attention back to Hold Steady business, namely deluxe reissues of Almost Killed Me and Separation Sunday. They arrived at the end of 2016 and to celebrate, the band (which welcomed back Franz Nicolay) played festivals and a series of sold-out shows in Brooklyn.

Torche

$15/All Ages/Doors at 7PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden

INFO: TORCHE are a band consisting of four dudes playing the loudest and heaviest hard rock on the planet. Formed by vocalist and guitarist Steve Brooks in 2004 after the dissolution of cult sludge and stoner metal pioneers Floor, the group introduced the world to a refreshingly unique version of rock n’ roll flavored with stoner and sludgy sensibilities. Originally from Miami, Florida, but now peppered across the country, TORCHE have spent the last 15 years shattering eardrums and captivating crowds with their infectiously original compositions and soaring, harmonic vocals.

Over the course of the band’s ten year existence, TORCHE have released three critically acclaimed full-lengths as well as a series of EPs and splits with such revered labels as Hydra Head, Robotic Empire, Volcom, and Amensian. Their 2008 breakthrough Meanderthal was described by Pitchfork as “an absolutely killer rock record” and was declared the #1 album of the year by Decibel Magazine. 2012’s follow-up Harmonicraft was called “a true gamechanger” by the BBC and “a pure fountain of instant gratification” by Spin.

Despite the praised they’ve received for their recorded works, TORCHE are known even more for their tremendous live performance and have toured the world relentlessly with a diverse pool of acts including Clutch, Mogwai, Hot Water Music, The Sword, Isis, and many more. In early 2014, the band signed with renowned label Relapse Records, and self recorded their fourth full length record Restarter. Full of what the band describes as some of their “heaviest songs to date”, the record was produced by TORCHE guitarist Jonathan Nuñez and mixed by Converge’s Kurt Ballou. Restarter was once again a masterful display of top-notch songwriting, this time pitting stomach-churning low end against the band’s characteristically high-flying vocals. Restarter’s reception overwhelmingly positive, with Pitchfork calling it “their most compelling record since Meanderthal,” and New Noise Magazine deeming TORCHE “one of the best metal bands active today.” TORCHE are here to prove that they are heavier, louder and more hummable than anyone else, and right now, nobody dares stand in their way.

The Love Gang Forever Tour 2019: Cold Hart & Horse Head (GOTHBOICLIQUE) w/ Fish Narc, YAWNS, Fantasy Camp, Lil Zubin

$17 ($15 adv)/All Ages/Doors at 6:00PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden

INFO:

Cold Hart: Seemingly unrelated genres like emo, gothic rock, and country, Cold Hart has become an innovator of genre-defying music.

Born and raised in the coastal city of Long Beach, California, Cold Hart was seldom seen without a skateboard in his hand. He would play records by post-punk’s Nick Cave or the Cure just as often as he would listen to rappers Speaker Knockerz and Chief Keef.

In 2014 Cold Hart co-founded the renowned collective, GothBoiClique. It was Cold Hart who officially titled the group after sending a beat with the same name to fellow co-founder Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. Starting in 2015, Cold Hart began to release a slew of singles and definitive vocal mixtapes such as OC Season 1 & 2 and Downer, which helped surpass his distinction as solely a producer. Today, GothBoiClique sits at ten members, including Lil Tracy, Wicca Phase, Fish Narc, Yawns, Horse Head, and the late Lil Peep.

In 2018, Cold Hart strayed away from sampling entirely on his acclaimed EP Wish Me Well, opting instead to incorporate live instrumentation with producer Yawns. Shortly after, the two released their smash hit “Eyes” with Rawska. Cold Hart’s listeners eagerly await his full-length debut studio album Good Morning Cruel World, which combines melodic elements of indie, post-punk, and hip-hop.

Horse Head: With his musical project Horse Head, Chris Thorne has pioneered the fusing of emo, pop-punk, and indie elements with hip-hop. Initially gaining distinction as a producer, Horse Head has become well known for his distinctive vocal delivery and poignant lyrics which resonate with listeners as he sings about experiences with loneliness, depression, and heartbreak.

Growing up in Orange County, California, Horse Head was the frontman of various bands, most notably forming the indie trio Tan Dollar in 2010. In 2013, he began to deviate from performing in groups, producing various hip-hop beat tapes instead. Horse Head soon joined the underground musical collective Thraxxhouse, connecting with artists Cold Hart, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, and Lil Tracy. The frequent collaborators quickly formed their own niche collective: GothBoiClique. As a member of the renowned group, Horse Head released a triad of projects in 2016, including True Blue, Celebrity Crush, and Lock & Key. Horse Head also produced numerous tracks for the late Lil Peep’s breakthrough mixtapes Crybaby and Hellboy, and also featured as a vocalist on their notable single “Girls” and “Stop the Car.”

In 2017, Horse Head issued his independently released the fish narc produced album This Mess Is My Mess. Horse Head has just announced his 2019 debut studio album We Had Our Fun, which features live instrumentation by YAWNS as Horse Head returns to his alternative indie roots.

Nahko And The Medicine For The People w/ Ayla Nereo

$29.50-$35/All Ages/Doors at 7PM

College Street Music Hall – New Haven

INFO: “As storytellers, we turn the experience into something shared. We are taking to that great road again to bring our medicine to you. Naming this tour the ‘Take Your Power Back Tour’ felt entirely appropriate given the state of the planet and all Her creatures great and small. Women of wonder and potent poetry will join us on that fall road. Ayla Nereo brings her big medicine to half of this tour and Nattali Rize brings her big power to the other half. We can already feel the high vibe container, a congregation cultivating a safe space for transmission and reconciliation. Tears and laughter. Movement and medicine. Arrive at our gathering this fall with whatever shape your heart is in. Full, broken, in pieces, strong, hopeful, hurting, overflowing, all of it. We’ll help best we can. It’s us. Together. We’ll see you there, familia.” – Nahko

Nahko And Medicine For The People continue to gather dedicated members of their global Medicine Tribe of likeminded fans as they spread their positive and powerful musical message around the nation on their Take Your Power Back headline tour this fall. Fans and critics alike praise the group’s worldly blend of rock, hip-hop, and alt-folk with OC Weekly calling the group “empowering” and “powerful”, while The Huffington Post compared Nahko to Bob Marley and called him a “musical prophet”. The October 2017 album ‘My Name is Bear’ premiered at #1 on iTunes and debuted on a number of Billboard charts, and the headline tour in support of the album boasted multiple sold-out dates throughout the USA and Europe. ‘My Name Is Bear’ is a 16-track collection that reflects the soul, authenticity, and spirit that Nahko And Medicine For The People’s Medicine Tribe has come to know and love. Their previous album ‘HOKA’, which was released in June 2016, sold over 8,000 units in its first week in the U.S. and debuted at #6 on the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart. The album went on to win Record of the Year at the Native American Music Awards later that year.

Nahko And Medicine For The People are firm believers in using music as a tool of empowerment to protect and preserve all of creation. They aim to inspire others to take a deeper role in protecting and preserving our planet, people, and the spirit in all of creation.

The band is thrilled to release new music in 2019 and continue their world tour this summer in advance of the Take Your Power Back fall headline tour, including stops at Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, Woodstock 50, Lockin’ Music Festival and more!

Wednesday, October 9th
Melvins, Redd Kross w/ ShitKid

$30 ($25 adv)/All Ages/Doors at 7PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden

INFO:

Melvins: It hasn’t been a year since the last bona fide Melvins album but nonetheless, slated for release is yet another album… However, this here new one is actually a RE-release of the classic Melvins record “10 songs”. Of course the NEW one has a NEW super deluxe cover and has been expanded to 26 songs. That’s 16 more than the original! The record even includes a secret recording of one of their hometown buddies out of his mind on Angel Dust. This added historical window should fully explain their origin and current message in a way never before captured on record.

Even if this reissue is 16 years old you can rest assured this record is up to date! If you get this record you can know there is nothin’ or nobody ahead of you. Nobody knows nothin’ that you don’t know. All the cards are on the table friends and that’s a fact!

Dang! It’s been damn near 20 years since these Melvins started and they still have yet to find the common decency to die or break up. The core-band of King Buzzo and Dale remains intact and they’ve had the same bass player since 1998! Hailing from the Minneapolis Cows is pioneering slide bass pervert Kevin “Rutmanis”. The Melvins proclaim this lineup the definitive whatever you want to call it of whatever it is they think they do. Nothing should be denied them forever more.

Don’t try to twist around or screw up this last one, it’s a lot easier to just surrender and let the good times roll. After all, the Japanese and the Germans surrendered and look at them now. One things for sure don’t listen to anyone about anything. The masses and the media don’t know shit. Have no fear, the Melvins and Ipecac know what they are doing. Just sit back and let these guys do the driving. Too many know nothing know it all music critics, humorless tire iron wielding troglodytes and internet weed heads spoil the broth.

Redd Kross: Redd Kross have always been too good, too perfect, too true, to believe. Mythic. Could this tuneful hardcore punk EP really be the work of a brother band with the 15-year-old on vocals and guitar and the 11-year-old on bass? Did Redd Kross really open for Black Flag? Could Jeff and Steve really have been born and raised in the Beach Boys’ hometown of Hawthorne, California, and did Jeff really see the Beatles live in 1966? Did one of them, dressed in Gene Simmons makeup, really kill a Bruce Springsteen impersonator onstage? Is that really their hair? Could Researching the Blues, their first studio album in 15 years, be not just the hottest thing since Cher went solo but the best start-to-finish Redd Kross record ever?

Somehow, the answer to all the above is improbably, wonderfully, beautifully YES. Long have Redd Kross rocked, and long have critics, devoted fans, Rodney Bingenheimer and fellow musicians from Seattle (Nirvana) to New York (Sonic Youth) to Driftwood, Texas (Butthole Surfers) to Hollywood (everybody) bowed before the Kross and their self-aware pre-spandex Glam bubblegum garage psychedelic Cheap Trick/Kiss/Revolver post-Kim Fowley rock and roll. Degenerate, sweet: tongues in cheek, song-long winks.

Lust for Youth

$15 ($13 adv)/All Ages/Doors at 7PM

Space Ballroom – Hamden

INFO: Pirouetting on decadence, meeting eyes with a dizzy sensation, falling and flying at the same time—Lust for Youth have continually held poise through the most vitalizing of times. Their new album, a self-titled collection of eight songs, is sure-footed where they had earlier feared to tread, and light-headed for a new set of reasons. The album is driven by a dance-pop agenda, hustling its way through upbeat peaks that level out into reflective ballads. While still taking clear cues from a crop of austere synth-pop, Lust for Youth sound brighter than they ever have before, taking tips from some of the flirtiest Eurobeat to aid their new direction.

On their previous album, Compassion, Lust for Youth examined euphoria and contemporary life with a wry wit. Where facetiousness masqueraded as commitment, compliments and fawning clearly yearned for a true connection. Lust for Youth sees Hannes Norrvide and Malthe Fischer taking some familiar strides, though to another place. The disaffected balearia is this time rendered into brighter pop compositions that bustle with intricate production. No longer galvanizing us with hooks, but with a songcraft unhindered by anxiety, the album presents a cohesion not seen in the project until now. Lyrically, the apprehension still hangs like tinsel. Often garish and celebratory, the droll mischief is this time more pointed, more personal, and far more self-aware. A thread of reflections upon the state of the world is artfully wound throughout the album, casting a quiet force upon the detachment of Norrvide’s vocals.

Lust for Youth have been one of love’s most honest confrères, detailing the pangs of what is all too often a sullen process. On this occasion, they look up. The pull of the world is different for us all, but it pulls us all.
