Mort Garson Mother Earth’s Plantasia [Reissue]
(Sacred Bones)
Mort Garson (1924-2008) was a prolific pop, easy listening and electronic composer and arranger of the 1960s and ‘70s, helping helm hits for artists like Doris Day and Glen Campbell as well as scoring various films and television shows. In the late ‘60s he became fascinated with the then-new Moog synthesizer, utilizing it for numerous pieces including this curious album first issued in 1976 (and now officially reissued for the first time.) Originally available only to those who purchased a houseplant at a Los Angeles store called Mother Earth (or anyone who bought a Simmons mattress at Sears), Plantasia consists of ten space-y, pleasant-sounding tunes designed for plants to listen to. Inspired by living amongst his earth-loving wife’s massive plant collection, Garson’s colorful ambient compositions have a fascinating retro charm to them. These include the urban-flavored “Baby’s Tears Blues”, the bubbly “Swingin’ Spathiphyllums” and the eerie closer “Music to Soothe the Savage Snake Plant”.
