Oren Ambarchi
Simian Angel
(Editions Mego)
Performing since 1986, Oren Ambarchi is an Australian-born experimental musician and multi-instrumentalist (he contributed guitars and a huge variety of percussion to Sunn O)))’s Black One album, for example.) He began as a free jazz drummer before discovering the guitar, which he’s learned to play fluidly despite never having had formal training. On this latest entry in his prolific discography, Ambarchi uses his electric guitar to convey a balmy, surreal ambient mood backed by percussionist Cyro Baptista (who’s worked with artists from Herbie Hancock to John Zorn.) The titular closing track begins with steely guitar strumming and engaging percussion before melting into blissful ambience that even incorporates piano.
