Sunn O)))
Pyroclasts
(Southern Lord)
Written and recorded alongside the critically-acclaimed album Life Metal (which was released six months prior to this), Pyroclasts is considered a “sister album” of drone metal from Sunn O))) and several collaborators. Fitting the album’s volcanic-rock-referencing title, Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley once again create thick, billowing atmospheres with their guitars on this quartet of eleven-minute drone tracks, considered “daily practices” during their sessions. Contributors to these otherworldly pieces are three artists who also appear on Life Metal: longtime Sunn O))) collaborator Tos Nieuwenhuizen on Moog synthesizer; Icelandic musician Hildur Guðnadóttir playing cello and halldorophone (an electroacoustic instrument); and baritone guitarist Tim Midyett.
