Converge All We Love We Leave Behind
(Deathwish)

Being a huge Converge fan myself, I have been wondering what the new album would be like.  All We Love We Leave Behind is Converge’s newest album and it does not disappoint.  The album is coming out on October 9th but is streaming online for now.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with Converge, they are a critically acclaimed hardcore band from Salem, Massachusetts.  Converge is known for their originality in the punk/hardcore scene and are envied by many of their hardcore peers.  This is their eighth album since 1994 and they are still fine tuning their sound.  With their menacing guitar riffs and in your face, out of control drumming Converge has the ability to “melt your face”.  In this new album Converge stays steady with their ability to kick every listener in their hardcore ass.  They continue their hectic, crazy, rollercoaster tracks while pumping up the listeners to feel like you are in a hardcore hell.  This album seems to be a little more hectic then then their last and a bit more emotional.  Jacob Bannon the lead vocalist has some singing/speaking parts in these new tracks.  This might be a bit strange for some Converge listeners; however I pretty much dig it.  All in all the new Converge album is pretty gnarly and makes me want to break everything around me while feeling like a bad ass. Good Job Converge.

Dum Dum Girls End of Daze EP
(Sub Pop)

I was surprised to learn that this indie dream-pop/lo-fi band has only existed since 2008, since their rich, radiant sound makes them sound like they have many more years’ experience. Their vocal structures and melodies remind me of the classic girl-group sound (one of the EP’s co-producers – Richard Gottehrer – is the writer and producer of songs like “My Boyfriend’s Back”) but Dum Dum Girls’ rock-oriented sound particularly matured and emotion-laden. For example, the gorgeously shoegaze-tinged “Lord Knows” insightfully focuses on repairing a damaged relationship (“I fear I am resigned / to the sky and up my mind…”) while utilizing a strongly memorable chorus. The driving opener “Mine Tonight” packs a thick, powerful punch with a spacey noise-pop guitar shimmer breaking in to emphasize lyrics that vocalist Dee Dee wrote after the death of her mother. I also really appreciated the energetic closer “Season In Hell,” which despite touching on apocalyptic themes, sounds like a trippy, empowered piece of end-of-summer nostalgia, even adding some surf-rock guitar to the mix.

Hostage Calm Please Remain Calm
(Run For Cover)

Hostage Calm is a rock/punk/hardcore band from Connecticut that debuted in the summer of 2007.  The band started out as a hardcore band, which appears difficult to believe while listening to this album.  Hostage Calm has changed their sound throughout the years and has tuned themselves into an extremely interesting and unique band.  The new album by Hostage Calm is Please Remain Calm.  This album is fantastically empowering and happy while being somewhat depressing at the same time.  Their mixture of punk, with a splashing of 60’s pop make for a wonderful mixture that only Hostage Calm could achieve.  The album has an old-fashioned feel to it especially in the song “Patriot” when there is a vocal harmonization and doo- wap that really warms the heart and makes me want to bob my head.   The vocals work in a weirdly perfect way with the instruments that are somewhat awkward yet beautiful.   The album goes through an emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs in life that everyone can relate to. There will be no other albums like Please Remain Calm this year.  This album may eventually be seen as a classic in this music scene, making it a must listen to for all punk music lovers.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!

(Constellation Records)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor formerly punctuated Godspeed You Black Emperor! And commonly abbreviated to GYBE or GY!BE  is a Canadian post-rock band which originated from Montreal, Quebec in 1994.  GYBE had their debut album in 1997 and was rumored to have broken up in 2003; however they announced their new album for October of 2012.  This new album is ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!  The album consists of four songs; two of them being about six minutes long while the other two are about twenty minutes long.  Although their album set up is quite strange, this is the type of band you have to listen to the entire album at once.  The entire album is like a story, a horror story if you will.  The songs contain the beats of drums that sound like marching, with the beautiful sounds of strings and the anxious sound of guitars.  The songs on the album sound like they begin with an orchestra warming up for a performance.  The build ups in this album have the listeners wanting more.  The bagpipes in the band make for a menacing creepy sound that expands throughout the album.  GYBE is still trying to perfect their sound and grow as a band.  This is a great album in which they show that they are still pushing the envelope.  Hopefully we will hear even more from them in the near future.

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 16

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 16
(If you’re seeing this on our home webpage [redscrollrecords.com] you’re going to want to press the “Read More” link on the bottom to view the videos.)

Trash Talk has a new album on the Odd Future label that came out Tuesday on CD (we’ll have it in tomorrow) and it will be out on LP next month. This short feature (about 7 minutes) captures the general spirit of the band and even has some of their music in it – get trash’d! (It’s more fun to use apostrophes than the letter “e.”)

Evan Weiss is the mastermind behind Into It. Over It., a project spawned from the idea of writing one song a week for an entire year. He’s also a long time friend of the shop. Evan will be hitting the road soon with a full band this time, making an appearance in Hartford w/ Hostage Calm, Make Do And Mend, The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die, & Slingshot Dakota. Check out this video released yesterday for, “Embracing Facts”, a song off 2011’s “Proper.”

Hey y’all, Caren here. I’ll be filling in here at the shop for the remainder of the weekend. Redscroll Records gets a ton of rad represses and reissues in here daily, but I’ve been most excited to get my hands on a copy of Lungfish‘s “Talking Songs For Walking.” After being out of print for quite a while, Dischord Records recently remastered and repressed this amazing record, and we have it here now.

the Mountain Goats have a new album out. This is a new video for a song from that. Arrangements in Americana. I like to follow John Darnielle on twitter because he says funny things. (Sean)

Cult of Youth have a new video for a song off their latest LP offering from Sacred Bones Records. It’s a lovely dark folk song with imagery that lines up well with its sounds. They’re also starting a tour tonight in Boston and will be in NYC tomorrow with SLUG GUTS who just played in Hartford on Sunday.

The BESTIAL MOUTHS release on Dais Records last year was one of my favorites of 2011. This new single has me salivating for more. Dark wailing goth rock. (Rick)

We post these videos daily on Facebook.com/Redscroll. Please “Like” that page if you are on FB. If you aren’t on Facebook then these are here for you – posted weekly. Music is so extremely important and good.

Third Man Rolling Record Store: Here Saturday

Third Man Rolling Record Store: Here Saturday

Yes, it is completely true, the Third Man Rolling Record Store will be here Saturday. Just in case you didn’t know: Third Man Records is Jack White’s (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, Dead Weather,…) record label. He also has a store by the same name in Nashville, TN where he often has bands play and then he often records and releases those on his label (the Third Man Live series).  The truck will be here from 6-8PM on Saturday as denoted by their schedule here.

The Third Man Rolling Record Store from Third Man Records on Vimeo.

It is very much like a food truck, but, y’ know without food and with records:

We’re also hoping to have a nice surprise we’ve had in our minds for a long little while and in the works for just an actual little while. We had planned on revealing the surprise I’m speaking of during our Blackout At Sunrise Sale, but why wait. You’ll see, it’s worth this note at the very least.

Ok, back to the Third Man Rolling Record Store. You can follow it on twitter here. Again, it will be in our lot from 6PM-8PM on this Saturday (October 20, 2012). Much as with a food truck it will be rolling in and the folks in the truck (I’m afraid Mr. Jack White will most likely not be with them, but there are friendly folks within I assure you) will direct you to queue up in an orderly fashion. We expect nothing but the best of our patrons so we’ll leave it up to you to be honorable and respectable of each other when waiting. Getting here early is definitely encouraged. Come early enough to shop inside our store as well (you’re smart, you know).

Cookie Duster When Flying Was Easy
(SQE Music)
Brendan Canning formed this indie-rock band in Toronto in the late 90s: they released one album before entering a hiatus in 2001 due to his other band – Broken Social Scene – surging in popularity. On their sophomore album, which came into being from the band’s revival last year, they deliver an interesting mix of tunes in varying styles, many of which have a summery keyboard-driven feel. It’s difficult to pinpoint this album’s style using just a few words, but it certainly has a fun, smart and mature nature to it overall. My favorite track is easily the excitedly beaming “Standing Alongside Gone,” drenched in a deluge of synthesized sunset bliss. The sunniest rack and first single “Two Feet Sound Up” is excellent as well, with an obviously enthusiastic sound of youthful energy. Even a slowed-down song about a totally incompatible relationship (“Something Evil Again”) sounds gorgeous and lively amidst the celestial synth and guitars. “Space Will Follow” is another high point, using a variety of brightly galactic-sounding guitar techniques to make the experience especially trippy.

Family Band Grace & Lies
(No Quarter)
Visual artist Kim Krans and formerly heavy metal-specializing guitarist Jonny Ollsin are the Brooklyn couple who make up Family Band. With the help of bassist and lapsteel player Scott Hirsch, they create sad, thoughtful, folk-inspired music on their second album. It starts off with the fittingly titled “Night Song,” using heavily distorted beats, Ollsin’s gently twinkling guitar and Krans’ mournful voice singing about lies, secrets, and waiting for dawn. Her voice particularly shines on the beautifully woven ballad “Moonbeams,” with a repeated desire to hear someone’s “wondering sound.” The lullaby-esque title track personifies “Grace” as a woman and “Lies” as a man, both in a relationship and singing out each other’s names: the vocals sound both mellow and passionate. The eight-minute closer “Rest” sounds softly dream-like as well, particularly in the first instrumental half: it ends with some surprisingly busy, unique ambient sounds behind the steel guitar chords and Krans’ moody vocals.
