Nite Jewel One Second Of Love

[Buy Online From RSR]
(Secretly Canadian)
Originally from Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Ramona Gonzalez has been creating her brand of electronic/alternative dance music since 2008. On her second album, the improved production values suit the minimal instrumentation well: right from the beginning of opener “This Story,” her impassioned voice combines with a wall of lush synth and resonant, nuanced drum beats to create a sound that instantly reminds me of 80s pop balladry. That electronic style stands out to me the most, such as when it sounds mellow and cooled-down with “In The Dark” and drawn-out and glowing in “Clive.” Her voice is what really takes center stage, though: for example, she shows off its smoothness and versatility with several layers in the funky “She’s Always Watching You.” The deep and multi-instrumented “Unearthly Delights” is another good example of saying a lot with minimal instrumentation.

Perispirit Spiritual Church Movement

[Buy Online From RSR]
(Digitalis Recordings)
Describing the experimental music from Boston-based duo Ricardo Donoso (synths, electronics) and Luke Moldof (guitar, electronics) is no easy feat: it’s abstract noise, but also extremely complex and focused. Both tracks are roughly 15-16 minutes each, and interesting to interpret the meaning of the record’s religious theme. The jarring, stark and warmth-free “14th Annual Séance” feels like a wordless telling of something that’s clearly not right, such as being haunted by the ghosts of a bloodstained past. It’s expressed with what sounds like literally hundreds of different electronic samples, all starting and stopping with complete abruptness (many of these sounds only occur one at a time – sometimes overlapping, but mostly sticking to a totally minimal nature.) “Attn: Deficit Order” takes a different approach, starting off sounding like the first track but transitioning into melodic synth, more-playful electronic sounds and scattered beats that make it feel like some sort of oddly relaxing alien jungle… before switching back to an unpredictable mix of bracing, head-spinning and sometimes relaxing noises (and back again.)

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 8

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 8
(If you’re seeing this on our home webpage [redscrollrecords.com] you’re going to want to press the “Read More” link on the bottom to view the videos.)

The Devil’s Blood was the most trance inducing live band I saw this year. Blood-soaked leather, the moans of a witch (The Mouth Of Satan) & an army of guitar players cast a serious spell on me. Do not miss them the next time they come to America. (Josh)

HEALTH “We are Water” from Eric Wareheim on Vimeo.

Eric Wareheim directed this and it’s not in the style you might expect (unless of course you’ve seen this before, duh). That “Get Color” album from Health got a lot of play here when it first came out. As noted there is explicit content (gore) in this video so possibly NSFW; sets a mood and stays in it until the very end. (Rick)

Converge has been one of my favorite bands for the past 7 years or so, and they’ve been releasing quality material for the past 20+ years. They recently put out a split with grind legends Napalm Death, and have a new LP coming out this fall. Rumor has it they’re playing around these parts in the coming months, so keep an eye out for that. (Sean)

We brought in some used Alice Cooper LPs today. Alice Cooper is a pioneer of hard rock who is a self proclaimed born again christian who loves golf and is well known for over the top stage theatrics including decapitations via guillotine. Check out this video for “Teenage Frankenstein”. (Josh)

This is not pop music. Not music. Visceral powerful bliss to the right ears. I like to listen so loud that it physically effects me (full body massage). (Rick)

Xasthur with Nachtmystium! Black Metal! I’m seriously just adding exclamation points to the description of this video. Two great tastes that taste grim together.

I’ll be the first to tell you I wasn’t into “Visions” quirky pop upon my first listen (or 5th). What makes this more inexplicable is that I was entirely into “Geidi Prime” (Grimes’s first album – I like the raw non-produced qualities) and her half of the split with D’Eon (still haven’t heard “Halfaxa” though). Long story short, saw her and gave the album another listen. Turns out I think it’s great. This most recent video reminds me that the NYC Comic-Con is happening the same weekend as the NYC RevFest 25th Anniversary dealio. (Rick)

Live Music: SunnO))) September 3rd (Labor Day)
The REDSCROLL METAL DISTRO will be there!

Monday, September 3 2012

Club INT (map)
16 Broad Street
New Britain, CT

8:00pm – All Ages – $20

SUNN O)))
Sunn O))) is an American drone metal/experimental band based in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA and formed in 1998. The band’s core members consist of Stephen O’Malley (Khanate, Burning Witch, SARIN, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Lotus Eaters, Ginnungagap, Thorr’s Hammer, Fungal Hex, KTL, Æthenor, Gravetemple) and Greg Anderson (Goatsnake, Thorr’s Hammer, Burning Witch, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Brotherhood, Engine Kid, False Liberty, Burial Chamber Trio, Ascend). The band was formed as a tribute of sorts to Earth, another very heavy band noted as the pioneers of drone metal. G. Stuart Dahlquist currently of Asva and ex-Burning Witch performed bass on The Grimmrobe Demos and ØØ Void.

Dead In The Dirt
Dead in the Dirt was formed by guitarist Blake Connally (ex final expression, me and him call it us) in Dec. 2008. This project did not see much progress occur in the first two years until the addition of drummer Hank Pratt (foundation, daymark, skull kingdom). Bo Orr (Mosaic) would then join on bass and provide vocals as well. Their debut release “Vold”was self released in summer 2010. Their follow up release was a Tour EP for the band’s first west coast tour with Foundation. Their third release will be a 10 song 7” released by Southern Lord Recordings in September 2011.

Dead in the Dirt also played “here” (at the secret location near Redscroll) last September – it was a powerfully loud and fast good time.

Vold e.p. by dead in the dirt

Rick will also be playing records between bands (fun fact: Rick booked the first sunnO))) show with Manic Productions). Incidental music for talking over and making conversation about that is relevant in some way to the bands playing will be played (read that clunky sentence 5x fast).

Club INT is a new (a revitalized Sports Palace) club in New Britain and is very promising for the future of live music in CT.  The sound system is impressive and I know that Manic is bringing even more than what they already have there to accommodate sunnO)))’s requests completely! Here’s a shot of its insides with As I Lay Dying playing:

The Redscroll mobile distro will be making a rare appearance here.  It may be the only one of the year! We’ll be bringing plenty of metal (very focused selection), but if you want something specific brought to this please let us know (redscroll@gmail.com is the best way).

A Place To Bury Strangers Worship

(Dead Oceans)
Originating in Brooklyn (and sometimes called “the loudest band in New York,”) this noise-rock trio sounds hell-bent on simulating the atmosphere of being lost alone in a bleak, massive and likely haunted industrial park. Oliver Ackermann’s distant, echoed vocals rise like clouds of dust off a machine of screeching guitars, tightly structured basslines and frequently mechanized-sounding drums (interestingly, six people took turns handling the drums and drum machine work throughout.) Thankfully, APTBS doesn’t blatantly try to freak people out; instead, they rely on a shoegaze-rooted sound, helping them sound even more focused in their ominous art as opposed to being unnecessarily confrontational. Their self-restraint is impressive, considering the aggressive nature of elements such as shrill, bracing feedback and numerous bursts of mysterious, ghostly noise throughout (opener “Alone,” for example, kicks it off nicely by offering a generous helping of said bursts.) They even manage to incorporate some heavenly dream-pop elements (“Dissolved,” “Slide”), which fit shockingly well.

On their ninth record, this British chamber pop/indie band performs a dignified-sounding, multi-layered experience that I’ve come to expect from the label. Employing guitar, bass, percussion, cello, glockenspiel, multiple brass instruments and more, they create a warm, room-filling sound that taps into a wide range of emotions. It kicks off with the nine-minute “Chocolate;” a spoken-word account of a romantic encounter with a surprise twist, backed by a mellow keyboard and eventually climaxing into some spirited sax. “Slippin’ Shoes” is a great example of moody jazz instrumentation built on a smooth, catchy structure. My favorites also included the memorable guitar-hook utilizing “Show Me Everything,” which starts out mellow and goes intense and passionate toward the end, and the fast-tempo “Frozen,” with deep, melancholy vocals and a huge variety of sensual instrument layers.
