Mount Carmel Real Women
 (Siltbreeze)[Buy Online from RSR]
This Columbus, Ohio trio sounds like they’re straight out of a dusty, sweltering barroom in the late 60s or early 70s: that’s how pure their brand of blues-rock sounds, right down to the guitar tuning and analog distortion. On their second record, they further refine their sound with just the right amount of roughness thanks to the twang-heavy guitar, high-energy drumming and spirited vocals. They’d fit the bill excellently with bands like ZZ Top, Humble Pie and The Allman Brothers Band; more recently, The Black Crowes and The White Stripes come to mind. The lyrical laments sound very genuine, such as dealing with the difficulty of finding “Real Women,” as well as the desire to “Be Somebody” else.

Sigur Rós Valtari
 (Parlophone) [Buy Online from RSR]
Once again, Iceland’s best-known ambient/post-rock quartet serves up an absolutely gorgeous record that sounds like it was extracted straight from their dreams. Like bassist Georg Hólm said in an interview, the album really does sound more electronic-based than some previous work; the synth, strings, piano and added choral vocals all make it feel like swimming through an endless realm of hauntingly beautiful subconscious thoughts. I have to admit that I have a weakness for this style: I love getting lost in these arrangements. For example, the first single “Ekki múkk” sounds nostalgic to an otherworldly degree thanks to its nuanced orchestral strings, drawn-out deep piano and comfortably beautiful vocals from Jónsi Birgisson. All of these elements come together to paint atmospheres that will vary for everyone – I envision late-day sunlight in a massive autumnal forest when I hear “Varúð;” one of several tracks (including “Ekki múkk,” undoubtedly) that really makes an out-of-tune-sounding piano’s resonance sound unbelievably intimate. Another highlight for me is “Dauðalogn,” which sounds like a wonder-filled ode to shimmering galaxies that stretch on forever.

This is a great spot and this event is another great opportunity to check it out. Dan Greene’s art will still be up and we have records for sale here. It’s an all ages venue and they serve refreshments.  Oh, and bands!

The Big Pink Future This

(4AD)
This London duo (Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell) serves up another record of passionate, synth-tinged indie-pop. With its high production values and enticing hooks, it’s easily accessible throughout – thankfully, though, they seasoned it with plenty of fuzzed-out effects throughout to make it especially resonant. For example, opening track “Stay Gold” and “Rubbernecking” have a powerfully jubilant, head-bobbing sound that should definitely appeal to fans of Sleigh Bells. Others, like “The Palace” and “Lose Your Mind,” reminded me of 80s pop with meticulous keyboard details and echo-y vocals. They’re great at conveying multiple moods; it’s particularly apparent when the record closes with the surprisingly melancholy “77.”

White Load Wayne’s World III b/w Godfather IV

(Load)
I’m impressed by how tight this Providence trio sounds, even when playing “black out drunk” as side two is described. Imagine hardcore punk (early Dwarves comes to mind) boiled down to its very essence: a raucous and just plain loud mix of quick-and-to-the-point songs with shouted vocals, a guitar that sounds thoroughly caked in mud and an eardrum-pounding beat that seldom takes a rest. Recorded at a place called “Vomit’s Hole,” side one sounds more “polished” (which I use in the absolute loosest sense of the word,”) while side two sounds the most “live,” primarily consisting of even-rougher versions of the tracks on side one. Needless to say, despite the obvious cliché of the sentiment, these guys truly do rock hard.

NZCA/LINES
(LoAF)
Hailing from London, Michael Lovett serves as the sole vocalist and instrumentalist for this lush, lively electropop project with a sound comparable to Hot Chip and Junior Boys. Citing R&B as a major influence – particularly from Timbaland’s production and Aaliyah’s work from her “Try Again” era – he incorporates several noticeable traits of the genre, such as multilayered vocals and moody-sounding keyboard lines.  The result is a catchy, breezy sound throughout. It’s particularly present on tracks like “Okinawa Channels,” which mixes calm vocals, old-school electronic synth and smooth strings, as
well as the particularly circuitous synth-laden chillout of “Work.” “Base64 Love” stands out as well: it sounds like an alluring romantic ballad with very unconventional lyricism (“if you’re out tonight / I’m formatting my hard drive / into FA1832 / but maybe we could play with the… ca-bles…”) The whole album is an interesting, well-played take on the electropop genre to say the least.

Black Dice Mr. Impossible
(Ribbon Music)
On the sixth full-length from this well-established Brooklyn experimental group, it really does sound like a natural progression from 2009’s Repo. Black Dice’s past efforts have evolved from violent art-punk to strangely soothing ambience to oddly danceable experimentation: here, they settle on more abstract arrangements of repeating patterns that work in several ways. For example, opener “Pinball Wizard” relies on two halves: a freaky 4-note downtempo buzz backed by spooky synth in the first, and a highly-kinetic drum that seriously gets the ball rolling (no pun intended) in the second. The energetic and colorful “Pigs” is easily the most accessible yet fun track: it sounds like a chopped-and-screwed mix of punk rock and rhythmic electronic weirdness. Also, the eight-minute-plus “Carnitas” interestingly manages to sound both sleepy and busy, with new, free-structured sounds popping up both gradually and unpredictably. Once again, Black Dice manage to craft fascinating, drugged-out dream worlds –I look forward to seeing how they’ll further evolve in the future.
