Colin McEnroe Show and More

Today’s Colin McEnroe Show (on 90.5 FM WNPR) was on the subject of Record Stores.
The show’s in-studio guests were Malcolm Tent (Trash American Style, Ultrabunny, WNHU Radio), Brendan Toller (Documentarian, I Need That Record), and Doug & Mary (Replay Records).  Dan (Mystic Discs) called in and so did Josh (Redscroll!) and so did a few fans of vinyl.
If you didn’t get a chance to hear it live, do not fret, it is available here:

Malcolm Tent (http://www.malcolmtent.net/) will also be performing live here at the shop on Record Store Day (Saturday) at 6PM.  He’ll be bringing his sparkly blue acoustic guitar and reveling listeners in song. It’s actually his second stop of the day – his first will be at 3PM in Brookfield at Gerosa Records.

And on Sunday, at 4PM on the campus of Wesleyan University Josh, Malcolm, myself (Rick) and others will join in a viewing and discussion of the film I Need That Record.
Information is also up on the WESU FM website here: http://wesufm.org/

Give Away Bags Goodie Goodie

Goodie Goodie Give Away Bags
We at Redscroll Records have been hard at work over the last few months, doing our best to piece together awesome give away bags for RECORD STORE DAY.
More and more fun items keep coming in every day. We’ve got records, cds, stickers, posters, buttons, matches, free tickets, limited zines, etc… you name it!
Stuff from A389 Records, Top Shelf Records, Safety Meeting Records, Manic Productions, Get Young Records, Sub Pop, Decibel, No Idea, Epitaph, These Are Not Records, Deathwish Inc, and the list goes on & on.
And last, but not the least of it, our friend DJ Lokash has put together a mix inspired by an exclusive Record Store Day track done for us by Benn Grim.  You can hear the track now.  Get the full mix by coming in (plenty of as yet unreleased tracks and general hotness) on Record Store Day (Saturday).

Reminder: Sale Starts Tuesday, Ends Sunday

Reminder: Sale Starts Tuesday, Ends Sunday
April 12, 2011 – April 17, 2011
20% Off Everything!
We’ve been working pretty hard to get our store as well stocked as possible.  The shelves are quite literally running out of space so there is definitely a good amount to choose from.

We kick off the sale Tuesday.  Why Tuesday?  Well, because that is our exact anniversary date.  We opened our doors on April 12, 2007 (4 years ago).  We’re going to go bowling at closing too (8PM).  Please join us.  We’re going to Wallingford Bowl (they close at 11PM and we’ll definitely be there until then).  They’ve also got some arcade games, a snack bar (soft pretzels, soda, nachos, …) and a regular old bar (adult beverages).
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the sale continues during our normal store hours (12PM-8PM).
Saturday is Record Store Day.  We’ll be open from 10AM-10PM on this day.  There are a ton of R.S.D. exclusive items we’ll be getting in.  A list of those will be posted by Friday.  Please check back if you’re wondering what we’re getting in.  Our goodie-bags for this day are coming together rather nicely.  There are a lot of different goodies and not every bag is going to be the same.  It will be completely luck of the draw about what you get.  They will be given to every customer until we run out of them.  Check out what you and your friends get and mix, match, trade and have fun with ’em!  As with previous years we’ll be having some end of the night festivities (HINT).
And then Sunday we conclude the sale during regular hours (12PM-6PM).  History has shown that plenty of great records will be here this day.  If you cannot make it until Sunday then it will be well worth it to come.  As with every week, deliveries will be coming throughout so our stock will continually be replenished and changing.  We’re excited!  I hope it’s contagious.

Trust Candy Walls / Trinity 7″
(Sacred Bones Records)

Mastered at 45RPM, this thing is short so this review will be too.  Sweet melancholy jams with a couple extra saccharine synthesized lines.  Solid.

Vaccine Human Hatred  7”

(Painkiller Records)

Vaccine offers up ten, fast & heavy hate-fueled straightedge powerviolence songs in just over four minutes. The opening track, “Your Life’s A Joke” takes a non sympathetic stance on drug users and perfectly captures the bands overall aggressive attitude. When I hear lines like, “DISGUSTING PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT / HAVE ANOTHER DRINK / BLOW ANOTHER LINE / LEARN TO FUCKING THINK / GROW A FUCKING SPINE”, I want to X up & run into somebody fist-first. In addition to being the bassist of this outfit, Will Killingworth also handled the recording duties at his studio, DEAD AIR. Will is a master of raw-sounding hardcore recordings. The band features members of FAILURES, GLUE, AMPERE, & RELICS.

Xander Harris Urban Gothic LP

(NNF223)

If you know me at all (I’m Rick) then you know I have an affinity for soundtracks and specifically the whole Italo-Disco HOrror variety of those (not really like American 80s films, but not necessarily not those either – catch me in the right mood).  Xander Harris (guise of a man from Texas) fills my hunger for exactly that niche.  This is actually titled as a soundtrack to an analogous horror movie with song titles to match the opening and closing credits and scenes in between.  There are moments when he vears towards EBM (samples laid in over them actually remind me of the better parts of Velvet Acid Christ [do yourself a favor and don’t research that]).  This one has actually been in my rotation for a while – he was gracious enough to send me out a CDr and tape late last year. I’m glad Not Not Fun got ahold of this and added some really nice packaging to the deal.  Looks good.  Sounds good.
