Saturday Night Decisions

Saturday Night’s All Right For Fighting

Connecticut is pretty small. It’s a small world, really. CT is just part of that small world.  Part of a part of a part of a part (CT, USA, Northwestern Hemisphere, Earth).  Within CT people involved with music production and events are even a smaller part of that smaller world within worlds. Saturday night has a very small circle biding for your time in very differently fun ways. Chill out with the final nail in the coffin to the summer of 2010 for Popeye’s Garage. Or party hard at the last outdoor event of the year with the Hartford Party Starters. Heck, if you can’t actually decide or if you’re just lazy, then go with whatever’s closest.

Re/Search: Industrial Culture Handbook

Avant! Records in stock

Avant! Records now available at Redscroll
There is a better than good chance you have not heard of Avant! Records or its offerings.  Well, let’s correct that.  Avant! is a fine small label out of Italy up to its eighth release (more on that to follow).  Music on the label tends to be dark and fuzzy (sometimes garage-like and sometimes folkish).  The first four releases are all sold out, unfortunately.  The latest four releases are all available in our store now.
[The following are the descriptions lifted right from the Avant! Distro Blog and mixed with some videos I’ve plundered from the netherweb.]
Cult Of Youth: Filthy Plumage In An Open Sea! 12’’ mLP
The third vinyl release from Brooklyn’s dark folk act contains a brighter and more focused side of Cult Of Youth that once again challenges the established boundaries of neofolk and post-industrial music.

Cccandy: Lonesome Berlin LP

Long time coming first LP. Cold wave, minimal synth, bedroom electronics on white vinyl, hand-silkscreend sleeves, insert with lyrics & artwork.

The Feeling Of Love: Waiting For The Cheerleaders To Get Drunk 7”

The Feeling Of Love is an actual trio now, synth came to stay and you can hear how it makes these two new songs sound more groovy than ever.

Krysmopompas: Gesa 7”
After their great double album on S-S, two darker and slower tracks without drums, only an analogue Casio beat to create a real cold-war feeling.

Autumnual Rituals

Fall begins today.  Autumn.

Scenery gets all colorful.  Food gets all appley and pumpkiny.  Clothes get longer.  Majick happens.  Pagans perform rituals while the darkness enshrouds this hemisphere.  School is in full swing.  Prime vacation time has passed (unless you are a wizard).

Records start showing up everywhere.  There are a slew of record fairs.  The biggest fair we’ll be set up at is the biggest one you can imagine: WFMU.  It is guaranteed that we will sell a bevy of vinyl there.  You can get a jump on that by buying up our good stock now!

We spent all summer digging, hunting and following maps to hidden treasures.  We are overflowing with grade-A used vinyl.  It is a prime time to get here and dig through our stacks.

Radio Radio Radio

Radio Radio Radio
Ben Michael –  General Manager Of WESU
You might not know this, but I (Rick) have been involved with community radio for a long freaking time.  Monday through Friday I get up and go to WESU in Middletown (Wesleyan University’s community radio station) and set up the day’s automated schedule.  I’m the only part time employee while Ben (pictured above) is the only full-time employee.  The rest of our staff is all volunteer (as were Ben and I before being put into our current positions) and they do a great job.

Recently (as of a couple weeks ago) WESU made the jump to 6,000 watts of broadcasting power!  It’s quite the jump from its previous power of 1500 watts (though there was a brief interim power output of 3,000 watts).  Listen to the 88.1 FM frequency and let us know where you tune in from by emailing upgrade@wesufm.org.

To check out the full schedule and / or listen online you can visit the website here: http://wesufm.org/.  The schedule includes our friend Anthony’s show, the Needle Drop, and our friend DJ Lokash’s show, Bassment Beats. It includes some other great syndicated shows of the musical and public affairs variety as well (seriously, just go check out the website and full schedule).

The last thing on this subject I want to mention is ME ME ME!  I am returning to the air waves after an absence of a couple years.  I will be doing a very late night show so if you are up at 2AM on every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.  Check the blog about the show here: http://nothingunderthesun.tumblr.com/.  After it airs, I post the show up on the blog too (if you don’t have to be awake at that time).

There’s also, in general, a ton of great programming on the left hand side of the dial on the radio.  Listen to the radio from time to time and even on the regular!  RADIO RADIO RADIO!
