Harry Pussy One Plus One

(Palilalia)
Among the things that this Miami band stood out for during their 1992-1997 existence – in addition to their name, of course – was their distinct brand of noise/experimental rock and live shows that were viciously intense enough to induce speechlessness. Although they typically played as a rotating trio, this double-LP only collects material from the founding duo: Bill Orcutt strums the twanging guitar across unbelievably circuitous paths while Adris Hoyos pounds the drums and, though it’s quite rare on this release, sings (her voice is far closer to that of a vulture than a songbird.) It’s a raw, bracing experience for those adventurous enough to venture through a jagged, disjointed punk scrapyard. This compilation consists of twenty-four songs recorded on a Walkman during the band’s first two years; nine tracks are previously released, but renamed and re-edited by Orcutt. The tracks range from straightforward-driven insanity (“Nazi USA,” “Improbable People”) to more head-spinning guitar weirdness, such as “Bad Space” and the opening track’s mutated instrumental reimagining of The Germs’ “Forming.”

Foxygen Take The Kids Off Broadway

(Jagjaguwar)
Olympia, Washington-based vocalist Sam France and NYC guitarist/keyboardist Jonathan Rado (both 22 years old) make up this songwriting duo. The label fittingly describes their sound as the “raw, de-Wes Andersonization” of acts like The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and David Bowie: indeed, it sounds like a tapestry of rock spanning the 60s and 70s, particularly blues and psychedelia. The songs sound refreshingly free and often theatrical, created from a variety of passages: for example, standout “Make It Known” is driven by, among other things, a smooth organ, groovy guitar and horns that start off sad but flourish for the catchy, particularly anthemically-sung climax. I also enjoyed the sleepy-eyed “Why Did I Get Married?,” which made me imagine The Beatles or David Bowie gradually incorporating elements of garage rock. The longest track – the ten-minute acid trip “Teenage Alien Blues” – sounds like a dizzy recollection of continuous fragments ranging from radio-friendly blues-rock to heavily lo-fi, weird noise-coated psych-rock.

Pallbearer Sorrow and Extinction

[Buy From RSR Online]
(Profound Lore)
Formed in 2008, this Little Rock, Arkansas doom metal quartet proves that it doesn’t take many years to sound absolutely epic. Like any band true to the genre, their songs are ultra-heavy and slow-tempo; instead of plainly writing about gloom or misery, though, they use their thoughtful-as-it-is-massive sound to entrance the listener with compelling, well-written lyrics. Vocalist/guitarist Brett Campbell sounds born to sing the part, giving his mostly first-person accounts a particularly majestic aura. He sounds mighty throughout, including the sole third-person perspective song telling of a despondent old man drowning himself (“Devoid of Redemption.”) For the rest of the album, Campbell poetically sings about a lonely, strength-testing journey “under swirling moons and galaxies,” facing “shifting paths,” an “immortal spectre” of death and, in the bittersweet, cinematic-sounding finale “Given To The Grave,” the catharsis and peaceful oblivion of death. They pull off the atmosphere so well that I feel like a silent observer on such an emotional odyssey: I’m especially impressed that this is only Pallbearer’s first album. It’s easily one of the year’s best doom albums, so they’ve set a high bar for the future (I have faith that they’ll find a way to clear it.)

Dollar Discs

DOLLAR DISCS!
($1 CD Bins)
We have too many things for this small shop.  That’s really the only reason we’re doing this.  If we could hold onto back stock and not run out of room as quickly as we tend to then we’d surely hold out on these.  However, in this scenario, you win.  Sure, there is some stuff I am not sure why we have in the first place.

There are also plenty of gems in here.
The VSS (Feat. members of Angel Hair, The Red Sparowes, and a few more bands)
CT’s own Biartz (members of Call It Arson and a bunch of other bands in the area)
This band, Medication, is not the one from CT. I actually don’t know anything about this band, but I like the Medication from CT so I thought I’d mention it.
Members of Kungfu Rick went on to form HeWhoCorrupts.
And many more! (Use a big voice when reading that – go back and do it now if you need to.)

We’ve never done $1 CDs before and once these are gone who knows what we’ll do in the future (yes, the future).  Get ’em while they’re here.

Get Hype #1: Shangaan Electro

Get Hype #1: Shangaan Electro
(author: Rick)

I’m going to give a quick dissertation on what I intend “Get Hype” to be as a continued series of posts.  Feel free to skip ahead a couple paragraphs to read about this album.

Every so often a person will ask me what I’m listening to or if I can recommend them anything.  Fact is, most of the time I don’t feel right recommending things to people I’m not intimately familiar with.  This is not to say I always come up empty with recommendations in person, but usually those recommendations are colored by what I might know of the asker’s tastes.  What if this music that I recommend is way off-base with this person’s personal leanings?  What if that discolors everything I say from that point on?  Well, that’d suck at the very least.  However, I’ve come to realize I don’t mind getting excited in general about anything on the internet (where the reader can instantaneously check these things out and make their own mind up).  In “Get Hype” I’ll spoon feed that information over.

I’ve already seen half-year best-of lists.  I think those are pretty silly.  We’ve had a few reviews up on our site lately too.  I might even do one or many in the future.  This doesn’t quite fit in those categories.  Some things just get me excited about music all over again.  Last year’s Cloaks album did that for me (which was on my year-end best-of 2009 list [yes, still silly]).  “Get Hype” is going to be reserved for albums that get me excited and perhaps even challenge my musical sensibilities (I do enjoy a challenge from time to time).  It won’t be a review so much as a general statement of, “Yo, I think this album is the bees’ knees, yo. I can totally jive to this, my doggies!  It is stupid fresh awesome def cool tubular to the max!”  Get it?  Get hype!

Various Artists “Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa” (Honest Jon’s Records)

So, here is the record that inspired this post.  Enjoy all the cut up reviews and videos and links.

“On the new compilation Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa, you can find 12 songs released by the Nozinja Music Productions studio in Soweto between 2006 and 2009.

Shangaan is dance music. It is electronically music based on the South African traditional music that’s popular in the areas between Johannesburg, Limpopo and Mozambique. It is an extremely fast and energetic hyperactive hybrid of the traditional mbira, or thumb piano, and synthesizers that can reach 180 beats per minute.  This genre is super popular in South Africa and tens of thousands of Shangaan records are sold each year. ” (The Smell Of Music)

“We don’t use the sounds of the hip-hop guys, or the afro-pop, or whatever, we’re using Shangaan sounds. The traditional Shangaan music is fast. You play it slow, they won’t dance.
Firstly it was played with bass and lead guitar. I’m the one revolutionized it, because when I came I didn’t use any guitar or any bass, I just used marimba and the organs. We are not using the live bass, we are using the marimba bass which is played from the organ. A small sample of voices, that’s what I specialize in. We use them in English. Those are the new aspects they never had before. At first people thought I was mad, and now it’s the in-thing” – Richard/Nozinja To Wills Glasspiegel, January 2010. (Honest Jon’s Records)

“The collection – lovingly compiled by Mark Ainley and Mark Ernestus (Rhythm & Sound, Hard Wax) – is hugely entertaining, and a fascinating insight into a musical phenomenon that has, up till now, been little-known outside of South Africa….it’s guaranteed to have you grinning like a loon” (FACT)

(And of course you can find more by clicking on the links in the videos.)
