The Haxan Cloak Excavation
(Triangle)
In that space where dark ambient finds itself a bit of an optimist, this is where I find myself meeting the Haxan Cloak. Synths layer low with high stabs and high-to middling melodies above muted thuds and assorted generally slow and at times meandering percussion. There’s a Resident Advisor podcast (http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=359) wherein the first line reads, “Joy O meets Sun O))) in a thrilling collision of sounds,” so there you have it. That’s right in my wheelhouse, as they say.

Jerusalem In My Heart Mo7it Al-Mo7it
(Constellation)
Active in Montreal’s music scene since the 90s, Radwan Ghazi Moumneh has spent eight years leading this ever-changing project that combines traditional Arabic music with experimental electronica. Its visually striking performances happen only once or twice a year, with the number of members ranging between one and thirty-five – never sounding the same twice. On this album, titled to mean “Ocean of the Ocean,” the hypnotic, adventurous sounds come from a trio consisting of Moumneh, French producer and musician Jérémie Regnier and Chilean visual artist & filmmaker Malena Szlam Salazar. Despite not being particularly familiar with the music of Western Asia, this proved to be a very compelling journey into the unknown. From the very first second of the opening track, with a title that translates to mean “Speak of the Woman in the Black Robe,” Moumneh envelops the atmosphere by singing a song that truly sounds straight out of ancient Arabia, backed with a shadowy synth drone that evolves into an orchestra-like melody when his voice ceases toward the end. Later tracks such as “3andalib Al-Furat (Nightingale of the Euphrates)” and “Dam3et El-3ein 3 (Oh Tear of the Eye 3)” rely on very complex, free-sounding string arrangements – most on a harp and buzuk – to convey the feeling of flowing down a Fertile Crescent river in the morning, complete with birds singing. The third track – meaning “He Titillates the Shepherd, but not the Sheep…” – is a particularly interesting evolution of old and new, with Moumneh singing over fast-paced synth that sounds like a spaceship.

Atoms For Peace Amok

(XL)
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke formed the Los Angeles supergroup Atoms For Peace back in late 2009. He sings and plays both guitar and piano: the other members include Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea on bass, Radiohead producer Nigel Goodrich on synths and keyboards, Beck and R.E.M.’s Joey Waronker on drums and Brazilian Mauro Refosco on percussion. The group’s February 25 debut album Amok sounds more accessible than Yorke’s 2006 solo effort The Eraser: the intricately clicking, minimalist electronic arrangements are most reminiscent of that album’s singles  “Analyse” and “Harrowdown Hill.” Flea’s bass weaves surprisingly smoothly in the mix, sounding funky in a way that’s way more intricate than screamingly colorful. My favorite tracks include the darkly minimalist computer-blip-into-sunset-swell “Default” and the haunting, kinetic “Judge, Jury and Executioner.” More highlights for me include the lively electronic rainforest atmosphere of “Ingenue” and the juxtaposition of energetic percussion atop the stark funereal synth of “Unless.” Overall, this album is a promising sign for things to come from this project: experimental electronic rock that’s easy to get hooked on.
[Reviewer: Mark] [Note: We’re currently out of stock of the LPs, but expect to have some in mid-week.]

The Manic Low Songs For An Up Day

(Moonlight Graham)
This is certainly an unexpected project from Jack Grisham, who’s best known as a punk vocalist (T.S.O.L., The Joykiller, etc.) Here, he’s impressively skilled at nailing what reminds me of an 80s/90s pop-rock sound, conjuring memories of acts like The Romantics, Counting Crows and Barenaked Ladies. Grisham’s upbeat, well-rounded tunes use layers such as an acoustic guitar, organ and horns to make them even more memorable. The primary theme throughout is love and relationships, with my favorites including the twangy “Good Girls Come Home,” which uses some speedy vocals that reminded me of Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as the flying “Let Me Come Up,” exploring a relationship in which both he and she are “crazy,” but she wants babies and he wants love. An album this lively sounding should appeal to a large audience.

Harry Pussy One Plus One

(Palilalia)
Among the things that this Miami band stood out for during their 1992-1997 existence – in addition to their name, of course – was their distinct brand of noise/experimental rock and live shows that were viciously intense enough to induce speechlessness. Although they typically played as a rotating trio, this double-LP only collects material from the founding duo: Bill Orcutt strums the twanging guitar across unbelievably circuitous paths while Adris Hoyos pounds the drums and, though it’s quite rare on this release, sings (her voice is far closer to that of a vulture than a songbird.) It’s a raw, bracing experience for those adventurous enough to venture through a jagged, disjointed punk scrapyard. This compilation consists of twenty-four songs recorded on a Walkman during the band’s first two years; nine tracks are previously released, but renamed and re-edited by Orcutt. The tracks range from straightforward-driven insanity (“Nazi USA,” “Improbable People”) to more head-spinning guitar weirdness, such as “Bad Space” and the opening track’s mutated instrumental reimagining of The Germs’ “Forming.”

Foxygen Take The Kids Off Broadway

(Jagjaguwar)
Olympia, Washington-based vocalist Sam France and NYC guitarist/keyboardist Jonathan Rado (both 22 years old) make up this songwriting duo. The label fittingly describes their sound as the “raw, de-Wes Andersonization” of acts like The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and David Bowie: indeed, it sounds like a tapestry of rock spanning the 60s and 70s, particularly blues and psychedelia. The songs sound refreshingly free and often theatrical, created from a variety of passages: for example, standout “Make It Known” is driven by, among other things, a smooth organ, groovy guitar and horns that start off sad but flourish for the catchy, particularly anthemically-sung climax. I also enjoyed the sleepy-eyed “Why Did I Get Married?,” which made me imagine The Beatles or David Bowie gradually incorporating elements of garage rock. The longest track – the ten-minute acid trip “Teenage Alien Blues” – sounds like a dizzy recollection of continuous fragments ranging from radio-friendly blues-rock to heavily lo-fi, weird noise-coated psych-rock.
