Avant! Records in stock

Avant! Records now available at Redscroll
There is a better than good chance you have not heard of Avant! Records or its offerings.  Well, let’s correct that.  Avant! is a fine small label out of Italy up to its eighth release (more on that to follow).  Music on the label tends to be dark and fuzzy (sometimes garage-like and sometimes folkish).  The first four releases are all sold out, unfortunately.  The latest four releases are all available in our store now.
[The following are the descriptions lifted right from the Avant! Distro Blog and mixed with some videos I’ve plundered from the netherweb.]
Cult Of Youth: Filthy Plumage In An Open Sea! 12’’ mLP
The third vinyl release from Brooklyn’s dark folk act contains a brighter and more focused side of Cult Of Youth that once again challenges the established boundaries of neofolk and post-industrial music.

Cccandy: Lonesome Berlin LP

Long time coming first LP. Cold wave, minimal synth, bedroom electronics on white vinyl, hand-silkscreend sleeves, insert with lyrics & artwork.

The Feeling Of Love: Waiting For The Cheerleaders To Get Drunk 7”

The Feeling Of Love is an actual trio now, synth came to stay and you can hear how it makes these two new songs sound more groovy than ever.

Krysmopompas: Gesa 7”
After their great double album on S-S, two darker and slower tracks without drums, only an analogue Casio beat to create a real cold-war feeling.

Get Hype #1: Shangaan Electro

Get Hype #1: Shangaan Electro
(author: Rick)

I’m going to give a quick dissertation on what I intend “Get Hype” to be as a continued series of posts.  Feel free to skip ahead a couple paragraphs to read about this album.

Every so often a person will ask me what I’m listening to or if I can recommend them anything.  Fact is, most of the time I don’t feel right recommending things to people I’m not intimately familiar with.  This is not to say I always come up empty with recommendations in person, but usually those recommendations are colored by what I might know of the asker’s tastes.  What if this music that I recommend is way off-base with this person’s personal leanings?  What if that discolors everything I say from that point on?  Well, that’d suck at the very least.  However, I’ve come to realize I don’t mind getting excited in general about anything on the internet (where the reader can instantaneously check these things out and make their own mind up).  In “Get Hype” I’ll spoon feed that information over.

I’ve already seen half-year best-of lists.  I think those are pretty silly.  We’ve had a few reviews up on our site lately too.  I might even do one or many in the future.  This doesn’t quite fit in those categories.  Some things just get me excited about music all over again.  Last year’s Cloaks album did that for me (which was on my year-end best-of 2009 list [yes, still silly]).  “Get Hype” is going to be reserved for albums that get me excited and perhaps even challenge my musical sensibilities (I do enjoy a challenge from time to time).  It won’t be a review so much as a general statement of, “Yo, I think this album is the bees’ knees, yo. I can totally jive to this, my doggies!  It is stupid fresh awesome def cool tubular to the max!”  Get it?  Get hype!

Various Artists “Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa” (Honest Jon’s Records)

So, here is the record that inspired this post.  Enjoy all the cut up reviews and videos and links.

“On the new compilation Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa, you can find 12 songs released by the Nozinja Music Productions studio in Soweto between 2006 and 2009.

Shangaan is dance music. It is electronically music based on the South African traditional music that’s popular in the areas between Johannesburg, Limpopo and Mozambique. It is an extremely fast and energetic hyperactive hybrid of the traditional mbira, or thumb piano, and synthesizers that can reach 180 beats per minute.  This genre is super popular in South Africa and tens of thousands of Shangaan records are sold each year. ” (The Smell Of Music)

“We don’t use the sounds of the hip-hop guys, or the afro-pop, or whatever, we’re using Shangaan sounds. The traditional Shangaan music is fast. You play it slow, they won’t dance.
Firstly it was played with bass and lead guitar. I’m the one revolutionized it, because when I came I didn’t use any guitar or any bass, I just used marimba and the organs. We are not using the live bass, we are using the marimba bass which is played from the organ. A small sample of voices, that’s what I specialize in. We use them in English. Those are the new aspects they never had before. At first people thought I was mad, and now it’s the in-thing” – Richard/Nozinja To Wills Glasspiegel, January 2010. (Honest Jon’s Records)

“The collection – lovingly compiled by Mark Ainley and Mark Ernestus (Rhythm & Sound, Hard Wax) – is hugely entertaining, and a fascinating insight into a musical phenomenon that has, up till now, been little-known outside of South Africa….it’s guaranteed to have you grinning like a loon” (FACT)

(And of course you can find more by clicking on the links in the videos.)

Sell Us Your Media

Redscroll Records is always buying used vinyl, CDs, DVDs, and books of interest! We pay cash, but we’ll give you a bit more in store credit.

Now that we’ve rearranged the store and opened up a whole new room for just used records we have a wealth of space. We’ve all got stuff on our shelves that we bought checked out once, and will never pick up again. I’m talking about things that you have no sentimental attachment to. Maybe you have a family member who is just holding onto things because they don’t want to spend the time to get rid of them – offer your time to come to our store with that uncle’s 70s rock collection, mom’s old Aleister Crowley books, your cousin’s ska CDs, … Spring is traditionally the time for cleaning so why not go through your collection and weed out anything you haven’t listened to in a couple years?  Why not?  I will tell you why you should.

It is beneficial for us, but it is also beneficial for you. Tag Sales, Craigslist, Ebay, … all those things take up a lot of your time.  Time is money, right?  We will pay you on the spot. Spin yarn into gold. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure (gender neutral usage).

Community!

When you go to a record store with a great used section it is because of a few factors.  Perhaps, the purveyors of said store found a magic beanstalk which they climbed and defeated a giant who had a great collection of discs (that were probably tiny to him).  More likely is that they’ve built a niche within the community.  They’ve sold and bought records to people with respectable tastes.  We have a respect for the people that come into our store and that is why we are writing this now.  Sell us your used media so that another may easily find it.  We all win!

905 Tapes Basement / Record Fair

This week has been crazy good. It has been the kind of week that I will look forward to next year as soon as this one is over. Luckily, it doesn’t end until tomorrow evening. A full week culminates in a massaging wash of noise, drone, ambience,… cathartic walls of sound, etc.

I’m sorry to say that Halflings is not playing as was originally planned. Nor is Poison Fingers. All is well that ends well as the lineup is now:
Roman Wolfe w/ D. Gookin (Collaboration)
Colorguard (Kryssi B.)
and Matt Grem (of Medhammer) possibly?

This is starting at 6PM which is a little early for a show like this, but after this week it’s going to feel like 4AM to me. Don’t go to sleep tonight. Stay up. Forget your first name. Show up and get blissed.

Roman Wolfe has a new tape out on 905 Tapes too. Check it!

In the morning from 11AM-4PM I (Rick) will be at the WESU Record Fair as well. Feel free to come by and join in on that fun too.
