Ema Past Life Martyred Saints LP
(Souterrain Transmissions)

EMA is Erika M. Anderson. Formerly of Gowns, she now has her own project.  You can read up on her in depth over at her artist profile on Altered Zones.  There are a couple musical clips and a short interview there as well.  Noisey pop/poppy noise songs lie/lay within this one.  Haunted lo-fi echoing folk songs.  You like the grimier side of PJ Harvey?  Here you are.  I do too.
[Reviewer: Rick]

Foundation When the Smoke Clears LP

(Bridge 9)

Foundation’s “When the Smoke Clears” is the latest addition to the
Bridge 9 catalog, and stands to be the label’s heaviest release in
years. While most other releases on this label lately are more
melodic, or even poppy (IE: Lemuria) Foundation adds something I
haven’t seen on this label in a while, and that’s pissed off, moshy,
straight edge hardcore. The lyrics are riddled with notes of internal
struggle and some referring to the current state of hardcore (“What
happened to the code of honor that we used to entrust? Ideas carved in
stone have now turned to dust.”)
This comes in a nice gatefold jacket with a variety of tour photos. It
also has a huge “Thank You” list, which I find less and less with
hardcore releases lately. Bring ’em back!

Fastbreak Fast Cars, Fast Women

(Big Wheel Recreation)

When this album came out in 1998, I didn’t like it at all. In the late
90s, I was much more interested in the heavier pissed off CTHC bands
(Hatebreed, Fear Tomorrow, Mans Ruin, Death Threat etc..) and even
less interested in any CT bands defecting to Boston. I was also just
way too angry to be into a youth crew band that shared borders with
pop punk.

Fastbreak for those that don’t know was a Connecticut youth-crew
styled hardcore band. Formed by members of Cornerstone in 1994. These
dudes put out some 7″s, then went on to put out full length releases
on Revelation & Big Wheel. Members were also in In My Eyes, Right
Brigade, & Piebald. Recently we bought a collection of used hardcore
LPs and there were a couple copies of “Fast Cars, Fast Women” in the
mix. I decided to give this another whirl and the verdict is, 26 year
old me thinks this is a solid record.

(check out baby Wes Nelson [Schematic of a Waking Life, Estrogen Highs, other bands] on stage)

Kode9 & The Spaceape Black Sun
(Hyperdub)

Kode9 is Steve Goodman.  Steve Goodman lectures in Music Culture at the School of Sciences, Media, and Cultural Studies at the University of East London and is the founder of the record label Hyperdub.  All this information can be verified at his website www.sonicwarfare.org – not so coincidentally he’s also penned a book with the name Sonic Warfare (by his credentials you might suspect that this is not a light read – you’d be right. It is dense with information [read: textbok]).  Kode9 knows how to make bass music.  Add his friend the Spaceape to the mix for some dynamism and you get a very nice future dub record.  At times more dub and at times more bass (nevermind if that doesn’t seem to make sense, just take it like it reads).  These aren’t really dancefloor bangers.  These tracks are headnodders.  Of course, I can go for a good headnodder from time to time on the dancefloor – these tracks just aren’t what you’d call “Killer Kuts.”  Bonus time: It’s a double LP with a gatefold done well/right with lyrics and a short comic on the inner sides.  Keep bouncin’.

Deafheaven Roads To Judah LP/CD
(Deathwish Music)
Hailing from San Fransisco, Deafheaven is a five piece genre-bending band. They’ve got elements of shoegaze, black metal, & hardcore (read: screamo). It’s no shocker that the band sites My Bloody Valentine, Burzum, & Orchid as influences. It’s also no surprise that these guys are on Deathwish; one of my favorite labels. While Deathwish does have a stacked roster of legendary bands, they also have plenty of new acts that push the limits of what can be shoved under the massive umbrella terms of, “hardcore” or “punk”. Deafheaven fits in beautifully. They’re also playing CT in a couple weeks: FB Event Page. (FFO: Wolves In The Throne Room, Liturgy, Envy)
[Reviewer: Josh]
Hooded Menace / Ilsa LP
 (Contagion Records)
I’m not even going to pretend like this is a review.  This is just a recommendation.  Death doom gutter music.  Ilsa is a little more doom than punk (like Coffins, but with less d-beat).  Hooded Menace is just evil gutteral death metal drawn out and slowly beating on your body (from the ear holes first, duh).  It’s limited to 500 copies so just get it while you can.  We have a couple.  It seems we haven’t had enough metal – even after a full weekend of it in Baltimore at Maryland Death Fest (both Josh and I and a few friends attended).

26th Of May 2011 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records
NOTE: WE WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY (MEMORIAL DAY). HAVE A NICE PICNIC! (CAPS LOCK MEANS THAT I MEAN BUSINESS!)
Note 2: There will be even more showing up on Friday, but that will have to be on next week’s update. Beat the update and check in at the store yourself (we get deliveries every weekday so really this goes for every weekday.)
Note 3: This is a day early (and with only one review by Sean) because both Josh and Rick will be attending Maryland Death Fest for the next few days. Sean will be at the shop for the weekend. Business as usual. The twitter account will probably have a lot of MDF related things for the weekend (and perhaps the blog and facebook as well – we pollute the internet daily).

Iron Lung / Mind Eraser / Hatred Surge / Scapegoat
Brutal Supremacy 2×7”
(our copies are actually on black vinyl)
 (Painkiller Records)
Brutal Supremacy is a double 7” compilation that showcases the works of Iron Lung, Scapegoat, Mind Eraser, and Hatred Surge. All of these bands play a similar type of fast and brutal (as stated in the title) hardcore, but each with a very unique sound. When I first saw the cover of this I instantly thought of the “Reality #1 #2 #3” compilations, which offer a similar batch of bands. If you’re into this genre of hardcore, this compilation will not disappoint. As an added piece of bait, the singer (Rahi) for (now defunct band) Insect Warfare has joined the roster of Hatred Surge (following the departure of one of their singers, Faiza).

The Banana Splits The Tra La La Song 7″

“The Banana Splits Adventure Hour was an hour-long, packaged television program that featured both live action and animated segments. The series was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, and ran for 31 episodes on NBC Saturday mornings, from September 7, 1968 to September 5, 1970. The series costumes and sets were designed by Sid and Marty Krofft and the series’ sponsor was Kellogg’s Cereals.[1] The show was Hanna-Barbera’s initial foray into mixing live action with animation.”
Wiki
I honestly didn’t even realize that it only had 31 episodes or that it aired in that time frame (a couple decades before I saw them). I remember them re-airing these Saturday mornings when I was a kid. I guess 31 weeks worth is enough for most of one year. I swear it seemed like a lot more. Guess not. So, this song is all about the hook (“Tra La La”). As a kid it’s easy to identify with (fun repeated sounds) and easier to remember. And it starts with a food count off (“One banana, two banana, three banana, four.”). So perfectly poppy rock and well, it’s performed by big old muppet type characters (2 dogs, an elephant and a monkey… errr, a dog, a lion that looks like another dog, a gorilla that looks like it could also be a monkey and an elephant that would be hard to confuse for anything else). Fun!  Oh yea, and there’s a song on the B-side too! Bonus! (Insert laughter and more fun.)

Defeater Empty Days & Sleepless Nights 2xLP/CD
Defeater is a hardcore band from Boston, and to no surprise are on Bridge 9 Records. What sets this band apart from other bands playing similar styles of hardcore is Defeater tells a story in each album. Each album tells a new story of a post World War II family, and their struggles coping with the war and internal struggles with family.
Empty Days & Sleepless Nights is separated into two sections: Empty Days. which is emotionally driven, sometimes technical hardcore and Sleepless Nights, which consists of four acoustic songs that finish up the album. I personally enjoy the Sleepless Nights portion of the album more, and I feel that it can appeal to a wider audience than the Empty Days portion can.
This release comes on CD, and a nice double LP gatefold package with a screened D side.

Noose It’s Your Time 7″
Vegan straight-edge hardcore from Chicago. These dudes are on React! Records and sound way more akin to early 80s hardcore (SSD, Negative Approach) then they do their labelmates. The recording quality is dirty, which I love. The microphone sounds like it’s buried deep down the singers throat most of the time. X-swatches, Football jerseys over hoodies, & stylish moshing.
