Donovan Quinn Honky Tonk Medusa

(Northern Spy)
Also known for his work with several groups (including The Skygreen Leopards, which he formed with Glenn Donaldson,) Quinn sounds moody, mellow and insightful on his third solo record. His music sounds like a mix of indie, folk and country styles: with his sleepy-eyed vocals, he sounds pleasantly content on songs like the warm, dream-like “Laughing City” (“every tail-light is a memory/ that burns a little candle for me.”) A few tracks later, “Dying City” provides a bleak but surprisingly calming perspective on the opposite, thanks to its gentle guitar and fittingly strong piano notes (closer “Love In An Evil World” also pulls off a somber, sky-wide atmosphere well with its synth.) Another track that I really enjoy is “Shadow On The Stone,” which starts out acoustic and rustic before incorporating a very country-perfect steel guitar. In addition to singing and playing the guitar and synth, he employs five other musicians: they include Papercuts’ Jason Quever (guitar and drums) and Odawas’ Michael Tapscott (keyboard, harmonica, harmonium and guitar.)

The Locust Molecular Genetics From The Gold Standard Labs

(ANTI-)
It’s hard to believe this San Diego grind/noise/spazz/whatever rock four-piece has been around for almost two decades. With their short, utterly chaotic songs using variously abused rock instrumentation (including some very unnerving synth) to kick down the rules of musical structure and incorporate snarky (not to mention puzzling) comments delivered in screams, they’ve proven to be quite polarizing to the uninitiated. Personally, I enjoy the uneasy listening that The Locust provides: even though the songs are insane (titles include “How To Become A Virgin” and “Twenty-Three Lubed-Up Schizophrenics With Delusions of Grandeur”), all the pieces fit together quite well. This isn’t outright improvised madness; it’s no surprise that The Locust’s tightly (and, of course, unconventionally) structured work has provided many with a bridge between more familiar forms of rock and the weirdo experimental world. This compilation features 44 tracks recorded between 1997 and 2003. Included, among other things, is their self-titled 7-inch EP, debut album and the Flight Of The Wounded Locust EP; contributions to split seven-inches with Arab On Radar and Melt Banana, and even a Queen cover: “Flash’s Theme” from the Dynamite With A Laserbeam tribute on Three One G.

Meet Kacie The Intern

 Meet Kacie The Intern

Hey guys! I am Kacie Bogan and I am the new intern at Redscroll Records.  I am a senior at Quinnipiac University.  I am a Media Studies major and I work at the radio station, WQAQ 98.1.  My aspiration is to work within the music industry; either by being on the radio, being a producer, doing public relations and more.  Redscroll Records is the perfect opportunity to get “my foot in the door” and see what it is like to work in a section of the music industry.  I am excited to learn more about this industry and work with other people throughout it.  You will be seeing me around the store, at events, and posting reviews.

Now that the Converge / Torche tour dates have been officially announced, we can talk freely about how awesome it is that they’ll be stopping for a gig in New Britain. Torche is a Florida based stoner metal band that is more on the yellow-smiley-face-have-a-nice-day side of the spectrum then the worship-satan-through-reefer-smoking types. Check out this video for “Across The Shields.” (Josh)

LE RÉVÉLATEUR / DATA DAZE from Sabrina Ratté on Vimeo.

Le Révélateur (Roger Tellier-Craig’s moniker; he left Godspeed You! Black Emperor in 2004) has a release on NNA Tapes that we recently got in. This video is a pretty straightforward visual representation of the sounds. If you are prone to seizures you may want to just hit play and minimize the window (or click on a different tab; y’know, technology). (Rick)

A friend of mine just traded in a stack of cool hardcore 7″s, including the Magrudergrind “Owned” 7″ on blue. Easily one of the top current bands in the genre. For 10 years now, this 3 piece powerviolence band from DC has been grinding all around the world. Check out this video for “Burden” which is comprised of live footage from Europe.(Josh)

We forgot to put a video up Saturday because we were too busy being stoked on Quicksand so I’ll post the following and then another for today. Here’s Saturday’s set.

Weirdos who love hip-hop are generally the kind of folks I ride with. This 7″ came out a little while ago and reminded me just how true that is. Get weird/stay weird. (Rick)

Ipsissimus is the finest black metal outfit to ever slither from Connecticut’s fertile womb. Currently on a hiatus while their drummer is studying ancient scrolls abroad. We are very proud to have been able to release a live tape by them (of which we still have a small handful) entitled, “GoatCultRites” before they went on to Metal Blade.

This holiday weekend Brass City Boss Sounds is bringing a bunch of heavy hitting legends to CT for their 3 day event, 2000 Tons Of TNT FEST. For me personally, Negative Approach is the band I’d want to check out the most. Here they are just a couple years ago, old? sure, but still raging! (Josh)

We post these videos daily on Facebook.com/Redscroll. Please “Like” that page if you are on FB. If you aren’t on Facebook then these are here for you – posted weekly. Music is so extremely important and good.

Nite Jewel One Second Of Love

[Buy Online From RSR]
(Secretly Canadian)
Originally from Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Ramona Gonzalez has been creating her brand of electronic/alternative dance music since 2008. On her second album, the improved production values suit the minimal instrumentation well: right from the beginning of opener “This Story,” her impassioned voice combines with a wall of lush synth and resonant, nuanced drum beats to create a sound that instantly reminds me of 80s pop balladry. That electronic style stands out to me the most, such as when it sounds mellow and cooled-down with “In The Dark” and drawn-out and glowing in “Clive.” Her voice is what really takes center stage, though: for example, she shows off its smoothness and versatility with several layers in the funky “She’s Always Watching You.” The deep and multi-instrumented “Unearthly Delights” is another good example of saying a lot with minimal instrumentation.

Perispirit Spiritual Church Movement

[Buy Online From RSR]
(Digitalis Recordings)
Describing the experimental music from Boston-based duo Ricardo Donoso (synths, electronics) and Luke Moldof (guitar, electronics) is no easy feat: it’s abstract noise, but also extremely complex and focused. Both tracks are roughly 15-16 minutes each, and interesting to interpret the meaning of the record’s religious theme. The jarring, stark and warmth-free “14th Annual Séance” feels like a wordless telling of something that’s clearly not right, such as being haunted by the ghosts of a bloodstained past. It’s expressed with what sounds like literally hundreds of different electronic samples, all starting and stopping with complete abruptness (many of these sounds only occur one at a time – sometimes overlapping, but mostly sticking to a totally minimal nature.) “Attn: Deficit Order” takes a different approach, starting off sounding like the first track but transitioning into melodic synth, more-playful electronic sounds and scattered beats that make it feel like some sort of oddly relaxing alien jungle… before switching back to an unpredictable mix of bracing, head-spinning and sometimes relaxing noises (and back again.)
