Popeyes Garage Pop-Up At Intercambio

POPEYES GARAGE POP-UP AT INTERCAMBIO
 {This guest post is coming to you straight from Kryssi who helped run the Popeyes Garage space/collective/descriptive term – I’ve added some links and flowered it up with notes here and there [each noted when I did]. Check these things out. Say you were there when… -Rick}
Intercambio, New Haven’s newest spot for art, music, and other will be hosting 3 noise shows as part of a Popeyes Garage* pop-up. The first show features Hive Mind, the solo project of Greh Holger of Chondritic Sound. Look forward to synth sounds with junk/basement aesthetic. May 21st will feature Dog Lady‘s new duo project incorporating violin, electronics, and probably some other stuff. May 27th we’ll wrap up the series with Pedestrian Deposit, LA’s most prolific noise duo, along with harsh and awesome Work/Death from Providence.
[*Editor’s note (Rick): I added the Popeyes Garage link strictly for reference as the old location is no longer active and thus neither is the wordpress site linked]

Come hang and enjoy these bands of ill-repute as well as Intercambio’s awesome downtown show spot. and support your local noise bands.

Shows are at 8:30ish and cost $5.
Intercambio is @ 756 chapel street, new haven

EDM Night People CD/LP

(Western Vinyl)
Formerly known as Early Day Miners, this Bloomington, Indiana-based quartet does a great job of crafting post-rock atmospheres while maintaining a comfortable indie/alt-rock sound. It’s the perfect ambience for spending a mellow night of unwinding after a long day. The rich sounding emotional hooks in tracks like “Hold Me Down” and “Open Bar” are easy to follow and get engrossed in. One of my favorite tracks is the most experimental: the 8-and-a-half-minute “Milking The Moon” builds the most intricate, creative patterns by swirling into elements of post-punk, psychedelic and shoegaze before fading into sharp, wailing feedback. “Stereo/Video” is one of the most interesting standouts, sounding like new wave evolving into robust, modern indie with curious lyrics (“I hear voices on the stereo / I see faces on the video.”) “Temple Bar” is another high point with its male-and-female vocals and warm, passionate sound with corresponding lyrical themes (“you’re safe with me, my word is true / I wouldn’t mislead you.”)

Whitehorse Progression CD

(At A Loss Recordings)
For over seven years, this Melbourne five-piece has been dredging along with its uncompromising brand of ultra-sludgy doom metal. On top of the traditional guttural/screaming vocals and slow-simmered mix of drawn-out guitars and percussion, these guys aren’t afraid to crank up the caustic noise of heavy feedback and various other forms of crusty electronic decay. “Mechanical Disintegration” kicks it off by sounding like a malicious spirit rising from a massive, weathered and creaking machine. “Progression” and “Remains Unknown” transition into more scorched landscapes, backed by what sounds like unidentifiable screeches of tortured souls. “Control, Annihilate” is an interesting transition toward the end, mixing fast speed, slow speed and noise like “Progression” before it. Closing track “Time Worn Regression” has the most memorable, “catchy” melody structure, but layers of heavy static and feedback (most present and the beginning and end, with a constant atmospheric rumble throughout) help make it sound even more menacing. It’s quite a ride.

Film Pass Give-Away: The Ballad Of Genesis And Lady Jaye

Film Pass Give-Away:
The Ballad Of Genesis And Lady Jaye

Rick: I love Throbbing Gristle. Love ’em. I love the individual projects (and paired, etc.) that have come after. I love the myriad projects that have been influenced by the mere existence of T.G. (not all of ’em, but y’ know). So, it’s incredible that this film is playing in Hartford and equally incredible that I now get to offer pairs of free passes to the first three (3) people (3×2=6 people getting in free) to tell me what the following symbol is associated with  in regards to post-T.G. projects and this film:

ALL PASSES ARE NOW GIVEN AWAY!

You should still go to Real Art Ways and maybe you’ll see me there!

 Movie Synopsis (http://www.balladofgenesisandladyjaye.com/ballad/synopsis/)

Genesis P-Orridge has been one of the most innovative and influential figures in music and fine art for the last 30 years. A link between the pre- and post-punk eras, he is the founder of the legendary groups COUM Transmissions (1969-1976), Throbbing Gristle (1975-1981), and Psychic TV (1981 to present), all of which merged performance art with rock music. Celebrated by critics and art historians as a progenitor of “industrial music”, his innovations have transformed the character of rock and electronic music while his prodigious efforts to expand the boundaries of live performance have radically altered the way people experience sound in a concert setting.
But that’s just the preamble to the story. Defying artistic boundaries, Genesis has re-defined his art as a challenge to the limits of biology. In 2000, Genesis began a series of surgeries in order to more closely resemble his love, Lady Jaye (née Jacqueline Breyer), who remained his other half and artistic partner for nearly 15 years. It was the ultimate act of devotion, and Genesis’s most risky, ambitious, and subversive performance to date: he became a she in a triumphant act of artistic self-expression. Genesis called this project “Creating the Pandrogyne”. Influenced, like so much of Genesis work, by Brion Gysin and William Burroughs Cut Ups , it was an attempt to deconstruct two individual identities through the creation of an indivisible third.
This is a love story, and a portrait of two lives that illustrate the transformative powers of both love and art. Marie Losier brings to us the most intimate details of Genesis’s extraordinary, uncanny world. In warm and intimate images captured handheld, Losier crafts a labyrinthine mise-en-scene of interviews, home movies, and performance footage. The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye documents a truly new brand of Romantic consciousness, one in defiance of the daily dehumanization of the body by the pervasive presence of advertising and pornography, conveying beauty, dignity and devotion from a perspective never before seen on film.
