Live Music: Iceage, Female, Medication, The Men- June 23, 2011 (New Haven, CT)

ICEAGE, FEMALE, AND MORE TBA
Thursday June 23, 2011 7PM $7 All Ages

Perhaps you’ve caught wind of the buzz surrounding Iceage, a young rock and roll group out of Denmark.  Perhaps you read the review I did of it here.  Perhaps you’re well aware of this band and have already made your mind up.  And you’re probably right, they are great.  I was very excited to be able to host them on a show here in CT (one of not very many stateside shows – I think there’s going to be 6 total for this tour).  If you haven’t yet made up your mind on Iceage you can check out the New Brigade LP on Dais (now on it’s 2nd pressing).  We have some at the shop (1st press went fast so be quick about it).  If you need a fix right now, then check this video:

Female is a local progenitor of the minimal wave sound. It’s quite good (and yes, Female is a moniker). Female has been very prolific and very under-the-radar. They’ve got many albums worth of material (66 tracks) available for free at the Free Music Archive.  Dig around on that for a while.  It should keep you busy for a minute.
Medication and The Men have rounded out the bill.  Coincidentally enough they both have recently released LPs on Sacred Bones Records.  I swear it’s a coincidence.  Good label.  You should check out their wares (uhh, we sell them).
Should be fun!

Spotlight: Ferocious F*cking Teeth

FEROCIOUS F*CKING TEETH!
F.F.T. is heavy, stoney, & aggressive. Dudes have fangs. Howl at the moon. They’ve got two drummers. How did they find 2 drummers?  Most can’t find 1! Easily compared to the Melvins. You like The Body, Lightning Bolt, and other loud Providence bands?  You can definitely hear the regional influence in that corner of the Earth. They’re productive. They got a new 7″ out they released themselves. It’s called “Hounds”. It’s hand numbered, limited to 300 copies, comes with a patch, download card and a zine insert (detailed review over at Wailing City). We’ve got the 7″ here now! And they’ve got a full length release on the horizon. They gig often. They put on shows in New London. Danny (Screaming Duties) volunteers at The Telegraph, cause he keeps it real.  His vocals are flavored with some fuzz and distance.  Live, the distance is about 1 millimeter from your face. Taste the flavor in your molars!
This is the patch you get with the 7″ – it’s a picture of Danny holdin’ it down and guess what?  Yep, that’s the CT State Quarter Redscroll shirt he’s wearing:
(That goblet is probably full of blood.)
FFT is playing with Gods and Queens, Cold Snap (CT), and Red Blade at Cherry Street Station here in Wallingford next Sunday, May 15th.  Get familiar with these boys and then come out and witness their mandibular force.

Bane Holding This Moment LP/CD
Equal Vision Records
This album features is a compilation of 3 early Bane EP’s; “Forked Tongue,” “Free to Be, Free to Think,” and “Holding This Moment EP.” While those are all now out of print and pretty hard to come by, you can pick this up thanks to Hurry Up Records from Ireland giving it a proper release. For fans of 90s hardcore, unity, stage diving, positivity, and sound clips. If you were ever wondering why so many people have (or had) BANE sweatshirts, listen to this and you’ll know.
LP Limited to 1,000 copies over 3 different colors.

Mexicans With Guns Ceremony LP
Innovative Leisure

Though the project title is plural there is just one man behind this.  It’s a producer type record.  Mexicans With Guns is probably not the next Timbaland, though if it were up to me he would get that kind of appreciation.  Heavy latin vibes with current electronic music trend touches.  Syncopated rhythms and flowing vibrating synths.  It’s really got a singular approach by the one man behind it and it’s really cohesive which says a lot when you consider how varied the guests on the tracks are (Sasha Perera, Freddie Gibbs, Chico Mann and a few more).  This is probably my go-to summer record.
(You can read a little more about it and stream the whole thing here: Fact Mag)

Turnstile Pressure To Succeed 7″
Reaper Records

This is six songs of NYHC worship. I’m hearing Tons of Madball & Leeway, but with touches of Shelter & 108. Heavy groovey riffs & clean solos backed by moshy drum beats. Turnstile features the drummer of Trapped Under Ice on vocals. I think TUI is cheesy so I was a bit turned off at first, but this is solid!
