The Banana Splits The Tra La La Song 7″

“The Banana Splits Adventure Hour was an hour-long, packaged television program that featured both live action and animated segments. The series was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, and ran for 31 episodes on NBC Saturday mornings, from September 7, 1968 to September 5, 1970. The series costumes and sets were designed by Sid and Marty Krofft and the series’ sponsor was Kellogg’s Cereals.[1] The show was Hanna-Barbera’s initial foray into mixing live action with animation.”
Wiki
I honestly didn’t even realize that it only had 31 episodes or that it aired in that time frame (a couple decades before I saw them). I remember them re-airing these Saturday mornings when I was a kid. I guess 31 weeks worth is enough for most of one year. I swear it seemed like a lot more. Guess not. So, this song is all about the hook (“Tra La La”). As a kid it’s easy to identify with (fun repeated sounds) and easier to remember. And it starts with a food count off (“One banana, two banana, three banana, four.”). So perfectly poppy rock and well, it’s performed by big old muppet type characters (2 dogs, an elephant and a monkey… errr, a dog, a lion that looks like another dog, a gorilla that looks like it could also be a monkey and an elephant that would be hard to confuse for anything else). Fun!  Oh yea, and there’s a song on the B-side too! Bonus! (Insert laughter and more fun.)

Defeater Empty Days & Sleepless Nights 2xLP/CD
Defeater is a hardcore band from Boston, and to no surprise are on Bridge 9 Records. What sets this band apart from other bands playing similar styles of hardcore is Defeater tells a story in each album. Each album tells a new story of a post World War II family, and their struggles coping with the war and internal struggles with family.
Empty Days & Sleepless Nights is separated into two sections: Empty Days. which is emotionally driven, sometimes technical hardcore and Sleepless Nights, which consists of four acoustic songs that finish up the album. I personally enjoy the Sleepless Nights portion of the album more, and I feel that it can appeal to a wider audience than the Empty Days portion can.
This release comes on CD, and a nice double LP gatefold package with a screened D side.

Noose It’s Your Time 7″
Vegan straight-edge hardcore from Chicago. These dudes are on React! Records and sound way more akin to early 80s hardcore (SSD, Negative Approach) then they do their labelmates. The recording quality is dirty, which I love. The microphone sounds like it’s buried deep down the singers throat most of the time. X-swatches, Football jerseys over hoodies, & stylish moshing.

Brown Angel Brown Angel LP
(Thunderhaus LTD /150)
Some things you know you’ll like from reading the write up (or at least you know that you will if the write up is actually being honest).  This was the case with this record.  It was compared to a bunch of ’90s dirge/sludge rock.  Right on.  Godflesh, Helmet, Unsane, and Slab! (when not getting funky) come to mind. Thunderous bass fuzz booming.  It’s got a couple drawn out jammers that almost bring to mind more current purveyors of dirge like Angellic Process, but with less introspection (more in-your-face yelling).  It’s hand-numbered out of 150 so I’m guessing they won’t be around too long.  I at least hope that.  I also hope it then gets picked up for wider release.  These Pittsburgh guys deserve it.

Bane Holding This Moment LP/CD
Equal Vision Records
This album features is a compilation of 3 early Bane EP’s; “Forked Tongue,” “Free to Be, Free to Think,” and “Holding This Moment EP.” While those are all now out of print and pretty hard to come by, you can pick this up thanks to Hurry Up Records from Ireland giving it a proper release. For fans of 90s hardcore, unity, stage diving, positivity, and sound clips. If you were ever wondering why so many people have (or had) BANE sweatshirts, listen to this and you’ll know.
LP Limited to 1,000 copies over 3 different colors.

Mexicans With Guns Ceremony LP
Innovative Leisure

Though the project title is plural there is just one man behind this.  It’s a producer type record.  Mexicans With Guns is probably not the next Timbaland, though if it were up to me he would get that kind of appreciation.  Heavy latin vibes with current electronic music trend touches.  Syncopated rhythms and flowing vibrating synths.  It’s really got a singular approach by the one man behind it and it’s really cohesive which says a lot when you consider how varied the guests on the tracks are (Sasha Perera, Freddie Gibbs, Chico Mann and a few more).  This is probably my go-to summer record.
(You can read a little more about it and stream the whole thing here: Fact Mag)

Turnstile Pressure To Succeed 7″
Reaper Records

This is six songs of NYHC worship. I’m hearing Tons of Madball & Leeway, but with touches of Shelter & 108. Heavy groovey riffs & clean solos backed by moshy drum beats. Turnstile features the drummer of Trapped Under Ice on vocals. I think TUI is cheesy so I was a bit turned off at first, but this is solid!

Brain Killer Every Actual State Is Corrupt LP
(Deranged Records)

I’ve been trying to snag a copy of this record since it came out last month, but as soon as we open up the boxes, these get bought up almost instantly. Brain Killer is a hardcore band from Boston, MA that plays fast, crusty & extremely noisy (tons of whirling feedback!). Generally for this type of stuff I prefer a 7″ worth of material, but these dudes keep it interesting and varied through out enough where I can’t help but pay close attention. Hopefully you’ll have the privilege of being made deaf by Brain Killer in a basement somewhere soon. (FFO: Gauze, Disclose, Deathreat)

Delayscape Morse Disco CD
(Anna Logue Records)

This came out late last year on a small import label dedicated to synth music (generally of a more pop variety – though not of the popular radio variety).  It’s a pretty excellent label and I may do a spotlight feature on it in the future.  For now, I’m letting you know about this excellent electro double disc set by Delayscape.  Delayscape lays down thick chunky (yes, the redundancy is necessary) synth lines with generally pulsating beats.  Elektro, even, with a Detroit techno influence.  Think of Legowelt or Drexciya or even DMX Krew. Jam.

22nd Of April 2011 Update & Reviews

22nd of April 2011 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records
You might notice that some of the Record Store Day stuff is part of this update.  Yes, that is what we have left.  In some cases we have actually acquired it after Record Store Day.  Some we even traded for with other record stores.  We tried to grab as much as we could of that stuff.  First come, first serve for any of that.  (Note about this: Store prices reflect whatever we have paid for these so some may have gone up and some may have gone down.)

Burn 7″
(Revelation Records)
Burn’s first seven inch was released in 1990 on Revelation Records and marked a new era for New York Hardcore. This was way ahead of its time, with unmatched drumming and difficult “90’s” riffs. This is up on my top 5 NYHC releases, and came out when Revelation was straying away from the almost formulaic (but still awesome) hardcore releases and getting into weirder stuff. Up soon after this release was the debut of Into Another, so you get what I mean.

Originally out in 1990 on Black vinyl and limited Pink vinyl (/1000), this has finally been reissued for RECORD STORE DAY. It’s now on Yellow vinyl, and limited to 1000 copies.

Discordance Axis The Inalienable Dreamless LP
(Record Store Day Repress On Hydra Head Records)

The name Dave Witte is what will first give you an idea of what this is.  His 2nd great grind band (Human Remains being the first).  Mathematically precise.  Honestly, this is a bench mark and I should be using this as a reference point rather than telling you what other things sound like it.  Every technical grind band that has come after owes a debt to these guys.
