Mailing List Updates up until Today (recent to older)

There might actually be a couple missing from this and this is certainly not indicative of everything we have in the store. I’m not sure what this blog will end up becoming, but I figured it was time to take advantage of the fact that it’s here. September 25th Update and NEWS!
Hello good citizens of the Redscroll Mailer!

First of all – I couldn’t just bulk add you all to the google group mailing list because it just thinks I’m a spammer because of the amount of people being added so you will probably be receiving an invite to that. Please accept it. I will be switching over to that soon (I had hoped to be there already, but alas I am not).

Secondly, updates are going to have to be less thorough in the future. We are expanding at an alarming rate (I’m serious – that’s not some subtle boast) and I can’t keep up with these updates being so thorough. So, future updates will be of new releases and highlighted restocks. I hope you understand and appreciate that. It will also make it easier for you to read these mailings – not so much of the same restocks to read through over and over.

Thirdly, thank all of you a whole hell of a lot. We are doing really well to an almost overwhelming degree and it’s in large part to all of you who support us and spread the good word.

Fourth – we signed Hostage Calm and will be releasing their CD next spring. We have free demos at the store and we did a small run of 50 shirts that are almost gone (come get them while you can – I think we’re out of mediums, sorry).

Lastly, enjoy this update. It’s not completely up to date – as I said, future editions will be slimmer and more manageable. It’s all true. There are a couple reviews from Josh and I.

Thanks,
Rick

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:

Josh’s Pick o’ the Week:

Road Warrior/Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (double pack)
There are very few absolute truths in this world, possibly only two. One of them being that Mel Gibson can do no-fucking-wrong. I love everything the man does, from Apocalypto all the way down to that shitty movie where he can read the thoughts of women. Whether he’s slicing throats, hanging out with Danny Glover, or going on religion-fueled benders, dude is brilliant! The second awesomely awesome fact is that the apocalypse is coming and its going to be awesome too! Mel knows all about it and thats why he has gone through all the trouble of making these semi-instructional post fall out gems. He’s even done one better and put these two on one disc!

First up is The Road Warrior. Mel plays Max Rockatansky aka Mad Max, a former cop who has lost everything except for his will to survive (check out Mad Max for back story on our hero). Max travels through the devastated wasteland formerly known as Australia, eventually, finding his way to a fuel depot run by a group of survivors, but its not long before they’re under siege by a fucked up road gang led by The Humangus. The survivors hire Max to get them down the highway with a gasoline tanker.

Next up, Max loses everything again and must battle Aunt Entity (Tina Turner) and her forces from Bartertown while defending a lost tribe of children who believe Max is their lost captain & saviour. Holy shit! Tons of high speed action in this trilogy closer!

Rick’s Picks:

Snares “Sabbath Dubs” 10″ (Kriss Records [Netherlands])

Aaron Funk has gone by many monikers in his time. All of them are pretty easy to decipher; he is the man behind Venetian Snares, first and foremost. He has also gone by Snares Man, Senetian Vnares, Bee Snares, Last Step (okay, not all are so easily decipherable) and a few more too. This time around he’s just going by Snares. And he decided to help out a fledgling label by contributing a solid release to their already impressive handful of releases (Drumcorps, Dj Scotch Egg, and Jahba). This is catalogue number 666 for them – I would hope that was requested by Mr. Funk. It is completely appropriate. He’s taken two of the most culture corrupting songs of all time (“Black Sabbath” and “Electric Funeral”) and kept the darkness intact and dubbed them into bass hell. To my knowledge this is the first foray into any kind of dub/dubsteppy type of territory for him and I really hope he sticks with it. These are not club bangers. These will not fill dance floors. These will make heads nod. These will put you into that dark elysian head space. All that and it’s on weed green vinyl with smokey black cloudiness.

Angels of Light “We Are Him” CD/LP (Young God Records)

Michael Gira is a man of god (definitely lower case). His transcendent lyricism goes back to his earliest days with the Swans. Much like the music behind it Mr. Gira’s relationship with the higher power is tumultuous with many many ebbs and flows. It is somber and quiet at times. It is boisterous and outright noisy at others. On “We Are Him” M. Gira has the fellows from the Akron/Family behind him again (as well as members of Antony and the Johnsons, R.E.M., the Swans, and more). The bond seems to have grown and perhaps they’ve even become parishioners to his personal church. The result is cathartic and joyous. Whereas the Swans tended to dwell very much in droning modal (church modes = ah, yes, not a coincidence) tunes, the Akron/Family brings with them another dimension – a dimension that includes chordal ragas (okay, maybe not in the purest sense, but it helps me move this review along) that achieve the same effect, but in another way. Listen to this, turn life off, and communicate with god.

Hey all,

I don’t have an inventory update for you this time. I took a trip to

the name Conifer from the last update). We are also having a sale
that starts today and goes through Sunday. So come in and enjoy the
savings. There are some pretty cool deals.

August 8th Update

Hello and welcome to another edition of our recent additions here at Redscroll Records. In this correspondence you’ll find a few reviews, a lot of new and restocked items, and hidden fun (aside from the obvious fun). Enjoy. And remember, this list does not include the hundreds – nay – thousands of very recently acquired used records and compact discs.

Josh’s Pick o’ the week:

Hostage Calm “Demo” [self-released] (CDR)

This is honestly the most solid hardcore demo I’ve heard in five years! Hostage Calm consists of 4 out of 6 members of Connecticut youth crew/ska crossover giants; At All Costs (no horns in this one guys). These kids play melodic hardcore without any of the cheesy bullshit gimmicks that might pop into your head when you hear the word, “melodic”. Think Embrace. Think Kid Dynamite. Think Ignite. The four songs on here deal with some pretty heavy topics like the genocide in Darfur or the faults of our two party political system. Bottom line: Hostage Calm is the most refreshingly sincere and important band to come out of Connecticut in a long fucking time!

Rick’s Picks o’ the week:

Last Step “Last Step” [Planet Mu] (LP/CD)

Dancing is fun. I like to dance. I like 4×4 beats and booty bass lyrics. I also like to chill for a minute. This record is a nice middle ground. It’s not dance floor crack, but it’s also not spaced out drone. Analogue equipment makes the sounds, but unlike the acidy direction taken with other analogue acts like Eats Tapes or Hnatiw, Last Step takes it to a nice mid-to-up-tempo spot. It’s elektro closer to Drexciya than Legowelt, but without the underwater theme. Put this on your hi-fi and get robotic like it’s 1984 and big brother just got smashed by the robot revolt. Holy crap! Robots are making this music and it’s time for carousel. Reincarnate me in the machines; I want to be this music. I’ll be the vocoded voice on “When You’re Smiling and When You’re Not.”

Ocean “Here Where Nothing Grows” [Invada/Important] (LP/CD)

Maine can be a cold desolate place. It makes perfect sense that it would breed incredible doom monsters. If this band and Conifer were to play at the same time in their home state I would expect to hear about an air shortage in the northeast. The pressure they’d build would easily collapse that corner of the country into the Atlantic. Slow plodding foot stomps of ancient behemoths akin to Neurosis, SunnO))), Earth, and isolation tank hallucinations. Devolution in front of my eyes, the crucified multi-eyed goat-head savior is probably already here.

July 17 Update o’ Summer Fun

Hey yo all y’all,

Here’s the update for the last couple weeks. Josh is in Philly for a couple days (back tomorrow) so instead of a review you’re just gettin’ a glimpse of his picks that are up on the wall in the store.

These updates DO NOT include the ever-growing used stock. Come down to the store to check out the ever expanding used sections.

Josh’s Picks from the wall:

The new 108 that he reviewed in the last mailing – it’s really good.

Token Entry limited colored vinyl pressing of the re-issues (also available on CD).

Judge “What it Meant (discography)” = if you don’t have it you should.

Rick’s Picks of the week:

Soul Jazz Records Presents “New York Latin Hustle! The Sound of New York Volume One” (Various Artists)

Okay, so first of all, there are two volumes of this. I recommend them both, but I’m just going to review this first one because I’ve taken to one particular song on it. This collection has a bunch of names I’ll admit to not being familiar with before listening to this, but I trust in the Soul Jazz imprint so I gave it a play. If you can’t get the dancing good time vibe off of this then you’re just dead inside and it’s really a shame. My condolences. To those who aren’t dead inside I suggest listening to side two last – the last song on side two is the jam. It’s La Charanga 76 (like I said earlier – I had no idea either) doing “No Nos Pararan.” That might not sound familiar to you, but when it’s translated to “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” I hope you know then and can appreciate it. When it’s stretched to nine minutes and thirty eight seconds I hope you want to dance for at least nine minutes and thirty seconds of that. I’ll give you eight seconds to catch your breath in there. It’s beautifully packaged and the sounds are completely wonderful discoveries from the New York Latin golden age.

“Mary Anne Hobbs Warrior Dubz” (Various Artists)

Mary Anne Hobbs does a radio show on BBC Radio One. She’s got her finger on the pulse of the electronic jams across the pond. This compilation is a group of artists that represent the biggest new genre to pop up in recent times. It’s got some grime. It’s got some drum ‘n’ bass. It’s mostly got dubstep (which is, of course, a bit of each grime and d’n’b). Burial, probably the most hyped artist of this genre, has a track on here. The Digital Mystikz, huge proponents of this genre who’ve gained respect in dub circles even before dubstep became a word, have a nice track on here. Overall it’s just a great introduction to a completely exciting new genre. If you’re scared of pure electronic music with no vocals then you needn’t be scared of this – sure, it’s got some of that, but there are great grimey guests including my favorite English hip-hop squad, the Virus Syndicate, on this. If your head isn’t nodding my the middle of the first track you’re probably asleep – and even then I don’t know what’d keep your head from noddin’.
