Bounds follows Craven Faults’ second full-length album
Standers. Following loosely in the footsteps of 2020’s
Enclosures release, here’s another 37-minute journey
through Northern England via a lifetime obsessing at the
fringes of popular culture. New details and perspectives.
Dusk gathering.

There’s some discussion over where this journey begins.
Certainly, less than twenty miles north-west of the city, but
possibly much closer. Ironic given we’re searching for a
distance marker. A gritstone pillar is the prime candidate
– destroyed by lightning almost 200 years ago, and then
rebuilt a quarter of a mile away. A curiosity. Many a journey
starts here these days, as we take flight and head further
north and west. The tarn was drained in 1940 to protect
critical infrastructure. We leave the sounds of heavy industry
behind us to float weightlessly over the moors.

We pick up pace and hit those levels of repetition
engineered to the highest standards in Düsseldorf and
Köln, 1971. A gift to the world. At this point the altitude
is no longer clear; there’s no sense of scale. We could be
a matter of inches from the ground, but the patterns are
the same. Eventually we arrive at a hillside with no defined
boundaries. The limestone pavement is visible in parts, and
snaps us into focus once again.

It’s a little way east for our next stop, very close to where
the journey began on Standers. Documents from 1651
suggest an arbitrary drawing of boundaries, the distribution
of power and wealth set down in pen and ink and then
passed down through generations. We beat a path around
the perimeter. The divides still exist although the crab apple
tree is long gone. Melodies give way to bent notes and
dissonance.

We take a circuitous trip to Hamburg and Rome for filming
between February 11 and April 23, 1972. A slower pace.
Less structure, but emotive, evolving. The master touch,
indeed. One final job before retiring and living off the land
for the next 373 years.

New Jazz LP from Trance Macabre!

Redscroll Records presents its very first jazz release!

Trance Macabre Cover

Via Nicholas Serrambana: Trance Macabre is grateful for the opportunity to release their first vinyl statement with Redscroll Records. One track is available now on Bandcamp along with digital and vinyl pre-order. Composer and bandleader Nicholas Serrambana plays fretless bass while joined by the ever urgent Wes Lewis on saxophone, the insightful Vigilance Brandon on brass, the uncanny Michael Larocca on drums, flute sorceress Autumn Asbridge, and Connecticut jazz pedagogue extraordinaire Noah Baerman on synth.

Vinyl comes out this Friday July 5.

This sextet reinvigorates the disenfranchised jazz fan through a punk theatricality and invites non-jazz listeners to enter the music without the dogma of genre. Though Trance Macabre presents compositions here, the presence of free improvisation is integral. Each of the four pieces here stretches out to prog rock lengths, but with both ample melodies and unscripted plateaus throughout. Those who are drawn in by the dissonant onset of the first song may find themselves surprised to discover the lyrical ballad that concludes side B. This record is for people who dare to recognize the singable in Cecil Taylor.

Wes Lewis (saxophones)
Michael Larocca (drums)
Autumn Asbridge (flute)
Vigilance Brandon (brass)
Noah Baerman (keys)
Nicholas Serrambana (bass)

Tongue Depressor “In the Quarter Column” LP Out NOW!

Our latest record release is by Tongue Depressor and it’s called In The Quarter Column and it is out today!

We have very limited quantities of this record left for in store sale!

Reception of this record has been incredible and honestly well deserved!

Autumn Records in Vermont runs a subscription service, Outer Sounds, that picked this one up for their June edition! In their write up they say this: It reminds me of a more lo-fi, dissonant version of Oren Ambarchi’s early pointillistic guitar work. A Singing on Side B moves in a more horizontal drone space with microtonal pipe organ and long tone bowed bass layers. Dissonance and beating patterns emerge among the alternate tunings again. Both sides offer up an immersive listening space full of details that reward multiple spins. This isn’t placid, background ambient music, its an enveloping & mildly dissonant world to explore that demands your attention not unlike the music of Alvin Lucier, Tony Conrad, Arnold Dreyblatt, La Monte Young, Phill Niblock, Charlemagne Palestine and more. Step inside and recalibrate your ears!

High praise! They’ll also have an interview up with Zach and Henry:
