Christopher Owens Lysandre
(Fat Possum / Turnstile)
Christopher-Owens-Lysandre 300
On his first album since leaving the now-defunct San Francisco band Girls, Owens affectionately tells the story of meeting a girl in France on his band’s first tour in 2008. His musical style combines elements such as indie folk, rock and pop, and his chosen guest musicians play everything from the flute to saxophone to organ to electric guitar and more. Owens handles at a brisk pace, starting with the half-minute Medieval-sounding “Lysandre’s Theme,” which returns several times throughout the album with different instrumentation. My favorites included the energetic, sax-filled “New York City,” with lyrics that juxtapose hard-luck memories with the upbeat chorus about finding luck in the city, as well as the tender, breezy acoustic title track about making time for love. It’s not surprising that everything Owens wrote and sang about is based on true events, because he really does sound heartfelt.

Tropic Of Cancer The Sorrow Of Two Blooms
(Blackest Ever Black)
tropic of cancer sorrow of two blooms 300x300
Mysterious and more mysterious, this act was formerly a duo (with Juan Mendez -> Silent Servant)  and is now the solo output for Camella Lobo. Tropic of Cancer toured with HTRK and had a live split with them on Ghostly International (Part Time Punks radio broadcast). Similar to HTRK her recordings feature cold, ghostly (happy coincidence with aforementioned record label release) sultry vocals soaked in a wash of effects and swimming through the layered tracks to each song (sometimes above, below or betwixt). Tracks feature equally cold production with straightforward pulsing rhythms and interwoven synth lines. Beautifully dark and comforting.
